Regional recipient of Afghan Support and Investment Program (ASIP) - to transition newcomers to long-term housing
San Diego currently has between 700-800 living in hotels
new arrivals from Afghanistan are paroled in (2 year max), unlike other parolees with Social Security number and employment authorization (usually arrives between 3-4 months after arrival) -- not on permanent residency track
new arrivals also work with CalWorks and San Diego Newcomer Project (formerly Wilson Fish); receive funds for three months ($ 1,225 per person)
Interested in
phone support with the ESL registration process
funneling clients/students into the right classes more effectively (English classes are required for CalWorks support; this can include ESL and ABE/ASE)
considering a managed registration process, with simplified paperwork, for their clients (ESL assessment would have to take place at CC office, on individual basis)
hosting ESL and job readiness classes at their site(s)
Offer behavioral health programs

Development of affordable housing; cannot help directly with housing but link to apartment sites they manage
