Workshop Series College Partners

How college partners want students to experience adult education:

  • as a starting point and resource, as a partner

SOAR: Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Resilience

  • already established connections

  • counselors at adult school, communication

  • SB 554

  • alignment of services, duplication?

Possible goals and strategies

  • Build out smooth transitions through direct connections with success counselors and faculty – college tours and career expos

  • outreach both ways

  • more opportunities for dual enrollment

  • Consider two-way support (e.g. offering math classes at adult school that support college students) – Offer college classes at adult school – alignment

MEETING SUMMARY

Participants agreed on the benefits of this program and are open to implementing additional steps in support of a smooth workflow.

  • A&R is working on identifying tools/a platform to automate the enrollment and status-check process. For now, the coding process (SB 554 student referral form, non/resident check/fee waivers) will remain a manual one and includes the exchange of several documents via email. We acknowledged that this makes this time-sensitive process somewhat vulnerable and person-dependent. (I hasten to add that both A&R offices are very supportive.) Participants generally welcomed the idea of a communication plan and added some more college-specific suggestions:

  • Grossmont College (present: Shawn Hicks, Courtney Williams, Gary Johnson, Linda Elia, Aaron Starck, Nancy Saks, Marshall Fulbright)

    • Would like to see students connect to the colleges' success coaches.

    • Coaches could either get a list of students before the start of the semester and then reach out to SB 554 students, or coaches could attend a welcome session (hosted by the consortium) for introductions.

    • Generally, Grossmont College meeting participants voiced hope that students would reach out to their professors first.

  • Cuyamaca College (Greg Vega, Martha Galvan, Kevin Brown, Agustin Orozco)

    • Augstin and Marsha suggested to connect to the newly established position "Inreach Coordinator"

    • Outreach/student support services could play a role in the communication plan

    • Communication plan should be considered

  • CPAP/ERAE team (Heather Westgaard, Joyce Liou, Ute Maschke)

    • Would like to set up a communication flow with both success coaches and department chairs (or designated person)

    • Courses most often selected by CPAP students: ENG, HIST, BIO, COMM, PSYCH, EARTH SC

    • Will prepare an official document to include timelines and persons of contact

    • Would like to start as soon as possible
