focused our read alouds around Remembrance Day. We enjoyed several books based on true stories and built our background knowledge on war and the act of remembrance.
worked through a Remembrance Day slideshow. We focused on:
What are we remembering?
How do we remember?
What does Remembrance Day mean to you?
participated in many conversations where students shared their thoughts and feelings on the topics that we were discussing.
brainstormed the importance of Remembrance Day and then wrote a paragraph about why it is an important day for all Canadians.
Remembrance Day
took apart the poem In Flanders Fields so that it would make sense to the students when they heard it. The phrasing of this famous poem makes it quite tricky to understand.

This is a sample of the paragraph that the students wrote.
Numeracy
This week we:
focused on four digit numbers. We learned how to write four digit numbers in expanded form, base ten sketches and with words.
Writing numbers in words is critical to practicing how to say numbers properly. At the beginning of the year, students were asked to write the number that I said on their paper. We did pretty well up to 3 digit numbers but then things fell apart quite quickly. For example, when a student is told to write the number for, "four thousand, two hundred twenty-six," many students wrote it like this: 4000226. We talked about how big numbers are broken up into groups of three...in Grade Three we are focusing on the thousands and hundreds. Students need to write down what they hear before the word thousand and then the number that they hear after thousand. Looking back at that original example: four thousand two hundred twenty-six...they need to write down the 4 that they hear before thousand and then the 226. This helps avoid adding unnecessary zeros to numbers.
Telus World of Science Field Trip
We had such a great time at TWOS! The students enjoyed their time exploring the galleries before we headed into the Imax theatre. The Great Bear Rainforest was AMAZING! The students were absolutely mesmorized! After a quick lunch, we headed into our Beading and Coding workshop. The instructors were so impressed with the behaviour, effort and creativity of the students. We finished our day with a little more time exploring the galleries. A big thank you goes out to the parents who were able to join us for the day!
