Literacy

This week we:

enjoyed 5 new read alouds. Two of our favourites included a little character called the Knight Night Owl.
focused on two new spellings for the /er/ sound, UR and IR. Students practiced spelling unknown words with both spellings and then choosing the one that looks right.
completed a caterpillar challenge to inspire our next personal narrative writing assignment.

Numeracy

This week we:

learned how to borrow from a zero (see video)
practiced switching between multi-digit addition and subtraction while keeping the strategies and routines straight.
played a new math game called Regrouping Scramble (see video)
started using a new program called Reflex to help the students master their basic facts. This program is being paid for by Black Gold School Division as a division wide numeracy initiative.

learned about different types of forces: contact and non-contact forces
explored the ideas behind Newton's First Law of Motion
worked through a variety of stations to explore different types of force
