started reading our first chapter book, Flora and Ulysses! Ask your child about the characters that they have met so far and how they would describe them. You can ask about: Flora, Tootie, Flora's mom, William Spiver and Ulysses

continued working on our personal narrative writing unit. This ties in perfectly with our Monday journal and Flashback Friday writing!

learned about Cle syllables. 

• • When you see a word that ends in a consonant and le, you cover up those last three letters to see if your first syllable is open or closed. If it is open, the vowel is long. If it is closed, the vowel is short.

learned about round numbers and it was so tricky! We worked through a variety of concepts to help students understand this skill. 

• • Can you identify the multiples of 10 or 100 that come before and after a given number?

    • • students learned that multiples of 10 are the numbers that we say when we are counting by 10s and multiples of 100 are the numbers that we say when we are counting by 100s.

      • what multiple of 10 or 100 come before and after a given number?

        • • Multiples of 10:

            • • 52: multiple before 50, multiple after 60

              • 427: multiple before 420, multiple after 430

          • Multiples of 100:

            • • 582: multiple before 500, multiple after 600

              • 4723: multiple before 4700, multiple after 4800

    • We worked on this skill with a number line to give the students a concrete visual to support them.

    • • 5 and up --> round up!

      • under 5 --> round down! 

  • Do you know where to look for the rounding rule?

    • • If you are rounding to the nearest 10, look at the ones and use the rounding rule.

      • If you are rounding to the nearest 100, look at the tens and use the rounding rule.

  • Do you know "the script"? (these are the words that we say to ourselves while we are answering a rounding question)
