New Year Reflection and Goal Setting
New Year Reflection and Goal Setting
Aurora Art
After reading, “Painted Skies” by Carolyn Mallory, the students were introduced to an art project to create aurora borealis with chalk pastels. They were taught a technique which involved tearing paper and smudging pastels in a way that created the illusion of northern lights. The students were asked to pay particular attention to the pastels they chose, using both warm and cool colours on the colour wheel. They were also taught how to create a landscape and add realistic trees by blending colours to develop texture which enhanced their artwork.
Barnabus Project
After reading this story, we spent the week completing activities using the story “The Barnabus Project” by the Fan Brothers. The students started by making predictions and had the opportunity to share them during class discussions. After listening to the book, we spent time making connections between events, the setting and main characters. The students worked on written responses by summarizing the beginning, middle and end. They also identified and reflected on the author’s main idea. To conclude our week, the students all created their own perfect pets and wrote descriptive paragraphs.
Objects in Space
We recently started a new unit in Science called “Objects in Space”. The students completed an activity to gain a deeper understanding of how the planets orbit around the sun and the distances between them.
