Hi Families 😀
Coming up shortly, we will be doing a week of local geography! 🌎
We’ve already spent time learning all about South Carolina and some of the fun facts about our beautiful state. Please continue talking about South Carolina with your student at home — they love sharing what they’ve learned!
Here are some of the things we’ve been exploring:
📍 We live in the State of South Carolina!
🏴 The state flag has a blue background with a Palmetto tree and a crescent moon.
We learned about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776, when Palmetto logs were used to build a fort that protected soldiers from British cannonballs — the cannonballs bounced right off the soft trunks of the Palmetto trees! That victory became an important part of South Carolina’s history and pride.
🐦 The state bird is the Carolina Wren, known for its cheerful, musical “tea-kettle, tea-kettle, tea-kettle” song!
🦌 The state animal is the White-tailed Deer.
🐟 The state fish is the Striped Bass.
🌸 The state flower is the Yellow Jessamine — a bright yellow, sweet-smelling vine that grows all around our state.
The students have worked very hard on a special South Carolina book that includes many of these details. They can’t wait to show it off!
Our next project will focus on Greer, Greenville, and our own personal spaces — including students’ homes!
We’ll be creating personalized maps that show local places our students know and love, such as:
Greer High School
Dooley Field
Walmart
Quality Foods
Greer City Park
…and more familiar class destinations!
To make this even more personal and meaningful, we’d love to include a picture of your student’s home 🏠 on their map.
If you’re comfortable sharing one, please email it to me at jtonnesen@greenvilleschools.us
I will print a copy for your student to attach to their map.
If you prefer not to send a photo, no problem at all — we’ll use a cute emoji house instead!
As part of our geography learning, students will also be practicing memorizing their home address and an emergency contact phone number.
Please complete the information below with only what you’d like your student to learn and include in their project:
Emergency Contact Name & Relationship: ___________________________
Contact Phone Number: ___________________________
Home Address: ___________________________
Picture of Home (optional): [Attach or send digitally]
Any other personal details you’d like your student to know: ____________________________________________
Thank you for helping make this project both educational and personally meaningful for your student!
We’re excited to help them connect what they learn in class to the world they live in every day. 🌎❤️
Warmly,
ID Mod Class Team 🎉
