We kicked off our map-skills unit by exploring our home state, South Carolina! We found our state on the map, spotted our capital, Columbia, and even located our city of Greer. We learned so many fun South Carolina facts, and you might have seen the little state book we made and sent home. It was packed with our state flag, animal, fish, flower, bird, and lots of other South Carolina goodies!
Then we zoomed in even closer and focused on something super important, our addresses! We practiced saying them, recognizing them, and even drew cute pictures of our own homes. Our students worked so hard to include the little details that make their houses special. Each drawing shows their personality, creativity, and the pride they have in where they live. We loved seeing their homes through their eyes!
To bring everything together, each student created their very own map! Their maps included local favorites like Target, Walmart, Quality Foods, Taylors Rec, the fire station, the police station, Greer High School, and the general area of their homes. It was such a fun, hands-on way to learn about where we live and all the places around us!
