With the 2023 football season coming to an end, the Cavemen are sitting at 2-6 and 23rd in the state at the 6A division. The Cavemen have one more game left in the regular season against their rival, the Roseburg Indians. The game is set to take place on Oct. 27 in Grants Pass. The Cavemen/Indian rivalry goes back to before most of us were alive. Not only is this a rivalry game, but it is also a crucial game for the Cavemen to determine where they are placed for the post season.

This season has been quite the wild ride for the Cavemen. It was a surprise for most of the team and their supporters. Last season, the Cavemen ended the regular season 6-3, being number 14 in the state. However, sadly, this season has not gone as well as most expected. The Cavemen are under .500 on the season but, on Oct. 27, have the opportunity to shock the state, making a run for the Colombia Cup and potentially playing well into Thanksgiving.

After their last game at home against the Sheldon Irish (9th in state), the Cavemen looked to carry the chip on their shoulder and unleash all the hurt on Roseburg. Losing 49-0 at home, the Cavemen had their worst loss of this season to one of the best teams in the state. Although the Cavemen lost, they showed a different team than we have seen yet this season. One of their big moves was moving former starting quarterback Nathan Bassett to wide receiver and defensive back, Bassett said about the switch: “I’m going to do whatever I can do to help the team succeed, and if that means switching positions then that’s what I will do”.

The coaching staff made the choice to put freshman Jordan Rosetta in the starting spot to lead the team. Jordan Rosetta said about being named the starting quarterback, “I’m very grateful to be named starting quarterback and I hope to fill the shoes that Nate left and lead the team to the promised land.” Although Rosetta's first game at starting QB did not go as he would have hoped, there are still games left to prove that he deserved that spot not only this season, but for the other three years he is in high school playing for the Cavemen

Although the season isn’t over, it leaves plenty of time for head coach Brad Page to show the state that his team was not just a one-hit-wonder. Only time will tell how the Cavemen’s season will end. It could end in two weeks or the season could go well into Thanksgiving, potentially ending an extended season, with the hopes of adding a Colombia Cup title to their resume and banners back home in Grants Pass.
