Long ago in the year 2011, a great game named Skyrim came out. This was during “The Golden Age of Gaming” (as known by the gaming community, which was 2006-2011, at least according to gamerant.com). The game featured an ancient era style with Vikings, knights, kingdoms, magic, cults, and more. Rated with an obvious M for mature, it has plenty of blood and foul language, and a built-in mod installer so that players can do essentially whatever they want in the game, but playing the story without mods is probably the most fun experience first. The game's enthralling tutorial incorporates the basics of gameplay, including a dragon attacking and destroying the entire city in which you were about to be beheaded. Saved by the bell, you run through a cellar aided by either a soldier or a rebel on your escape from the collapsing city. Once free, you are thrown into this large, expansive story where you can follow the game's questline or go off and do whatever you so please.
Rated at a 9.5/10 rating on IGN for its “rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding experience, and one of the best role-playing games yet produced,” the game has touched many gamers' lives. In an IGN article review by Charles Onyett, it was said that this one game was “one of the most fully-realized, easily enjoyable, and utterly engrossing role-playing games ever made.” Essentially, in just one game, developers have accomplished the entirety of everything a player could want. Earlier in the same paragraph, he was explaining how his house in Whiterun (one of the major towns in Skyrim) was decorated and organized not for a need to do so, but simply because he wanted to. It was a break from all of the powerful dangerous enemies. It just became a faucet of in-game life. He explained how it wasn't even for anyone, only his house-maid Lydia would see it, but she is just a computer-generated character. He explained how, once you are out into the world of Skyrim, it is just pure freedom and a lot of the elements from prior Elder Scrolls games had these super expansive character creation screens. Now, that has been condensed, and in some cases, eliminated like intelligence and endurance stats, instead opting for a simpler easier way. In this new way of creation, you make a character with a choice of ten races with their own little buffs, like the orcs who can go into a rage making close combat more powerful, or the High-Elves who can regenerate magicka at an increased rate once a day. Then, over time, you just upgrade your skills with smaller and bigger weapons, heavier and lighter armor, and sneaking and going in loud.
On the topic of freedom, Skyrim offers plenty. You could go do a quest, kill a dragon, buy a house, explore ruins, hunt, practice magic, or even join a cult or group of assassins. With a large and expansive amount of walkable land, there is plenty to do. The game is rather expansive when it comes to trying to find new secrets. No matter where you go, there is usually something interesting to be found. For example, when traveling near Whiterun, you could randomly stumble upon “Broken Fang Cave,” which looks rather intriguing (or scary) before you enter, for the outside is coated in blood, skulls, and bones of former people (NPCs) who were likely in the same position as you are now. Once you enter this traumatizing crevice, you notice how dark it is, with bones sprawled about the floor you now tread on. Deeper and deeper you head, until you hear voices. Then, the next thing you know, your presence has been noticed and now you are being attacked by vampires. Many experiences like this can be had in Skyrim but, still, many continue to play no matter how scary or even mundane it may appear at times because most who have played know that right behind that next corner is a twist that will send them back into a craze over the game.
Overall, the game Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one to be remembered, for it is one of the most expansive and enthralling games out there. With tons to consume your time, it will definitely keep most playing for hours. Even with a condensed character creation menu and screen, it is super detailed, with all the different races and their looks, and you can change every little detail of your character's face and muscle mass.
