In this article, Karlee talks about a great job experience for modified diploma students as soon as they graduate.
Are you looking for a job? Are you tired of being insulted over the smallest disability that you grew out of or are still dealing with? Well, say no more with the Youth Transition Program. The Youth Transition Program or YTP for short is a three-year program for seniors that starts at the beginning of the school year and places students into adult jobs.
The base for this program is in room 611 by the cafeteria at GPHS. The door usually gets locked for about an hour around 9:40 a.m. due to meetings taking place in the room, which is normally open during the school day after that. For those that need a break during the day, the Transitions program has a medium-sized living room in the classroom where individuals can play multiple card games and watch T.V. To the right, see a list of services that program directors will go through with prospective employees before doing the work.

Being involved in YTP requires an interview. Interviewees, do not really need to stress or physically prepare themselves. When I walked in for my interview, I immediately knew where I was going to sit throughout the meeting and they showed me a slideshow of people's past experiences in the program.
I had my first meeting with some of the members of the company, who were soon to be some of my bosses. I was accompanied by my grandmother, which made me nervous, but I still managed to stay professional. The meeting apparently went slightly well. Suzan and Bob were very nice, offering everyone coffee and talking about one of my other friends in the program.
Everyone who gets accepted to YTP has a similar schedule, which looks like the one listed below. I was told by program directors that it is not required to attend every day because they are fully aware that the heat can be exhausting.
Monday- Check-in card; work at Safeway, help with carts.
Tuesday- Work at a farm in town
Wednesday- Work at Josephine County Farm & work in the back kitchen at GPHS
Thursday- Volunteer at the city library
Friday- Work out or swim at The YMCA
I will come back to Grants Pass High School soon, not as a student, which is sad, but at least I get to work. Even though most of that work is probably going to deal with farm animal manure, it is better than crowded stairs and a 5% chance of someone making you fall every day.
A little bit of a bittersweet thank you/traumatizing rant from a graduating senior: I'd like to thank Mrs. Albertson, Mrs. Connelly, Mrs. Lehnhardt, Mrs. Bakersmith, Mrs. Mackin, and a last huge thank you from this school to Mrs. Tyrrell. I was scared going into high school at the beginning. I was shy and scared to talk to people because, at my middle school, I was not treated fairly at all and a lot of people gave up on leading me the right way. If it was not for my passions or the teachers teaching said passions, then I do not think I would be here and I'm three years and five months free from depression. Ultimately, I will miss this but the YTP program seems like an interesting future.
