Elisabeth, an exchange student from Belgium, presents interviews with all of the exchange students who passed the program this year at GPHS.
Alejandra Rodriguez is an exchange student from Spain. She is 15 and, next year, she is going to go to high school to finish school before going to college. She loved being on the ski team. She met a lot of nice people on the team and she felt integrated. Her favorite part about her year is the friends and family she made. She is grateful for that and she will never forget them. Her least favorite part is the homesickness. During winter break, she was feeling homesick and missed her family and friends back in Spain. She is going to miss the fact that school is very easy here, so she doesn't have to work too hard, as opposed to the school system in Spain. Something that shocked her was the food. It is very different than in Spain and it is not only fast food, as people in her country say.
Julia Moreno, an exchange student from Spain, is 16 and is going to do her senior year again back in Spain. She loved going to all of the school events to watch and cheer for the school teams: football, basketball and baseball. Her favorite part about her year is the trips she had. She went to Disneyland, Seattle and San Francisco with her host family and then went to San Francisco again with her friends. Her least favorite part was the bad experience she had with her first host family, so she had to change, which was hard for her. She is going to miss her host family and her friends here. Something that shocked her was the difference between the expectation and the reality. For example, the stereotype of fatty foods or the fact that people see Americans as fat, but it is not like that.
Mary Urban, an exchange student from France, is 18 and has already graduated in France. Next year, she is going to go to college. She loved being part of many teams and being around coaches. She also loved being able to do a lot of volunteer work for track at the rotary meet and she is also in the yearbook and Z Club. During winter, she did Cross Country and she did Powderpuff with the seniors. Now, she is doing long-distance 1500m in track. Her favorite part about her year is the people she met in the clubs and teams she was in. She said, "They are full of kindness and generosity." Her least favorite part is the homesickness and the fact that she does not see her family. She is going to miss the people in Grants Pass because they are amazingly kind. Something that shocked her was her friends dipping fries in ice cream.
Lilli Weinreich, an exchange student from Germany, is 16. Next year, she is going to go to high school to finish her years. She was on the cheer team during the basketball season, which she also does in Germany. Then, during the spring season, she did sprints in track. She did Powderpuff, as well. Her favorite part about her year is learning so much about friendship, gaining more independence, and knowing who she wants to be. Her least favorite part is feeling alone a lot and not feeling like she belongs anywhere. She is going to miss her host family and her friends here. Something that shocked her was the amount of money she spent here-- so much.
Jakob Kaminski, an exchange student from Germany, is 16 and next year he is coming back to high school to end his years. He did football but, sadly, two weeks before his first game, he got injured and twisted his ankle. He still enjoyed doing the practices before that time and watching the games from the side of the field, with his other injured friend. He did Powerbuff and played volleyball with the seniors. His favorite part about his year is when he went to Disneyland with his host family and he especially loved the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. He did not hate anything from his year, but he does not like to think about the end of the exchange. He is going to miss his friends and his former host family. Something that shocked him was the prices. Everything is more expensive than it is in Germany.
Ines Loidi is an exchange student from Spain. She is 17 and, next year, she is doing her last year of high school. She is on the tennis team. It is a sport she does back in Spain and she really enjoyed playing with the team here at GPHS. She also did the Powderpuff, playing football with the seniors, and she loved it. Her favorite part about her year is meeting so many amazing people and experiencing fun school events and activities, and playing on the tennis team. Her least favorite part is being so far from home and not having fun during winter. She is going to miss her friends and her boyfriend. Some things that shock her are the prices, how big the high school is and how seriously people take the sports.
Sofia Novotna, an exchange student from Slovakia, is 18. She is taking advanced classes and she enjoyed being a member of NHS, HOSA and Brain Bowl. Her favorite part about her year is making new friends for life, scholarship activities, the road trips she made, and her host family. Her least favorite part is the food combinations, like the pizza with ranch and pasta with chicken. She is going to miss her American friends, her host family, the late starts, the school dances, and the refried beans. Something that was difficult for her was finding friends at first, overcoming the language barrier, the culture shock, and eating American food.
Elisabeth Demanez is an exchange student from Belgium. She is 18 and, next year, goes to college in Belgium, studying language. She was on the cheer team during basketball season, and she really enjoyed it. At the beginning, it was hard to follow all the cheers and dances, but she got it at the end. She is also in The Scroll and enjoys writing articles every month. It is good practice for her English writing. She also did Powderpuff against the juniors. Her favorite part about her year is making friends all over the world and traveling. She went to NYC, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Her least favorite part was the loneliness that she felt at the beginning of the year. She is going to miss her friends and little host brothers. Something that shocked her was the fact that people don't say what they think face-to-face. Some act very nice to you but may be fake behind your back. It is very different from Belgium, where people say everything they think to others and do not talk behind their backs.
Maria do mar Pires dos Santos is an exchange student from Portugal. She is 18 and already graduated in Portugal. Next year, she is going to college in the Netherlands with her boyfriend.
