The Thrilling Adventures of JCLC at CAMP WILLIAMS

Featuring: Taylorsville, Ogden, Independence and Ben Lomond

This year's JCLC was full of new adventures, new opportunities, and the chance of being a leader to others. Some of the words that our cadets used to explain how their experience went are thrilling, funny, exciting, bonding and adventurous.

For those who haven't been informed about what JCLC is, and what activities our cadets are participating in, JCLC stands for (JROTC Cadets Leadership Challenge). During this 5 day experience the cadets from all over Utah and sometimes Idaho experience a typical day in the army, with a sleep schedule of waking up at 0430 (4:30am) and going to sleep with lights out at 2200 (10:00pm) on the dot. And in between there are multiple activities. The daily schedule goes something like this, the first day you arrive around noon and start getting processed by unloading all of your items in the barracks, then we all head over to get signed in and receive our dog tags. Have dinner, then get to know your companies and the people in them. Then we all hangout and play some volleyball and get ready for lights out. In the following days you will wake up and get ready for your day in your OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern). Then we all fall in our formations and march to breakfast (definitely racing to the commons area first).

You will get moved to the training area where you will participate in a list of different and unique activities some of these activities are,

Rappelling off a 45ft tower, there are two options you may choose, free rappelling with no wall. Regular where you reppalle on a wall.

LCR (Leadership Reaction Course) there are 2 sides. The wet ones and the dry ones. And then they put you in a small group and given a scenario where you have to deliver ammo to your comrades at the other side of the mine field with other obstacles you need to avoid in the process.

Orienteering or Land navigation is where you and one other person is sent out to collect checkpoints with a map and a compass in the woods or in bushes while being timed.

And a Show and tell of some special forces and other MOS (Military Occupational Specialties) in the army and a short demonstration of a hostage rescue. They came in on a helicopter and it was amazing to watch and experience.

The last day of JCLC has a very strong feeling of accomplishment and friendship. There is an award ceremony to give certain cadets awards for things they have exceeded expectations in, i was given 1st place with a friend for the Orienteering competition while others were giving awards for being a superior Leader and taking charge.

JCLC is a place to make friends for a lifetime and an opportunity for real leadership. That's what happened for all of us. We all were successful in the end.
