PIRATE CENTRAL
π§Cyprus Pirates continuously refine knowledge and skills to chart a successful course through life.
ACADEMIC
π Cyprus High School will raise its graduation rate by 1% per year until we get to 87%.Β
SOCIAL SKILLS & DISPOSITIONS
π Student sense of belonging will increase 3% as measured by the Panorama Survey from the beginning to the end of the year.
π Students will be on time to class 5% more frequently in 25-26 than they were in 24-25.
TALENT DEVELOPMENT
𧩠PLC Teams will regularly collaborate on DuFour's PLC Questions 3 and 4:
How will we respond when some students do not learn?
How will we extend the learning for students who are already proficient?
π¦ Teachers will increase the number of students they call for Advisory in order to put into action DuFour questions 3 and 4.Β
π Stakeholder Feedback should be collected every semester you have new students
π Provide Graduate of Granite Self Assessment to students every quarter
If you try to click on the links above and the webpage says you do not have access, please be sure to click login in the top right corner of the page and enter your Granite credentials. Once you are logged in, you will be able to view the links above.
π―Grade Posting Due Monday October 20th at 11:59pm
β οΈ Enter at least a code (TR), if not a grade, for every box for every student, or the grades wonβt post.Β Β
To ensure youβre seeing all students, including those dropped:Β when in Gradebook, click the βSettingsβ gear in the top right corner of the screen.Β Then, tick the box that says βInclude Inactive Studentsβ.Β From there, you should be able to see the dropped students in your Gradebook and enter the TR codes or grades as necessary.
YIKES! If the posting window is missed, the teacher will need to use the βRequest Grade Changeβ feature in Focus and put in requested changes one student & one course at a time.
NEW STUDENTS If newer students have enrolled within a few weeks of a quarter ending and they come to us without transfer grades, we still are required to enroll them.Β I always advise them up front that they may not receive a grade without transfer grades and at that point itβs up to the parents to proceed or not.Β As teachers, it is entirely up to you if that student earns a grade or not.Β If they come with transfer grades, you will receive an email from their counselor with that information.
ADVISORY Advisory classes are pass/fail.Β Either click the dropdown box under the 'Grade' column and select 'P' or type it in.Β For the explanation put "pass/fail".
POSTING FOR DROPPED STUDENTS You will use this process to post final grades for students that were dropped from your class and need a final grade posted. You do not need to wait for the posting window to close to submit a grade change request for dropped students. Admins/Secretaries will not be able to approve grade change requests during the grade posting window.
IMPORTANT: Graduate of Granite is not PBL.Β If a student is generally meeting expectations, they should receive a 4.
BE AWARE: 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will need a 3.0 CPA to walk at graduation!
π At least once per quarter administer the Graduate of Granite Characteristics self-assessment
Student self-assessments provide information as teachers decide and input scores
NOTE: Dependability scores and overall CPA scores will populate once the Use Gradebook Β button is clicked. If you post early and need to have the dependability score updated at the end of the grading period, you will need to click the Use Gradebook button again, and that will recalculate the entire class.Β Β
Remember, ONLY Dependability scores automatically populate based on attendance.Β The other sections require your professional judgement for a score.
Mass Update button changes default citizenship scores for one characteristic at a time
The score defaults to 3, but you can click the βMass Updateβ button, select a characteristic, and select a score you want to mass update to.Β If the majority of your students have a particular score in a column other than three, this is a much faster way to update those scores, then just change the few scores you need to individually.Β
TIP! You can use the TAB on your keyboard to go from one score to the next, and use your keyboard to type in a score instead of utilizing the pull-down.Β You do have to point and click the first box to get started, though.
Submit a ticket here.
If you see issues with a grading scale or rounding let jeleroy@ and wwalden@ know.

To make this transition as smooth as possible, be sure to set up your USIMS profile now and save any information you need from the UEN CACTUS website before the transition date.
Tip!Β Use a personal email address so you can still access USIMS if you leave the district.

Visits:
We will have Member Matt Hymas from the Utah State Board of Education at our school on Thursday, September 18 in the afternoon. I believe he is slated to get here at 1pm. He will want to tour the school and drop in on some classes, so please don't be alarmed if a small group of folks wander into your room on Thursday afternoon.Β
I also believe that Steve Rose, the Seminary Principal, will be here that same afternoon walking around with some dignitaries from the world of Seminary. Not sure they will interfere or interrupt anyone, but, again, if you see a group of folks walking around, that's who it is. I will ask the Seminary folks to swing through the office for visitor passes.Β
Advisory Update:
There was a section of the email that was sent out today that read as follows:
Present Students: If you mark a student present, you must also indicate which room they are in and notify their advisory teacher via email or Teams. This is crucial for emergencies.
This was probably not written as clearly as was intended. It should have read more like this:
After Deadline Requests: If you mark a student present, you must also indicate which room they are in and notify their advisory teacher via email or Teams of the after deadline request. This is crucial for emergencies.
It was referencing students who are added to the spreadsheet late. I will reiterate once again that while there may be circumstances on occasion where a student needs to be called to an Advisory class beyond the deadline, the common practice should be to put students on the spreadsheet by the deadline so that all the communication pieces that are in place can work. Calling a student late creates extra work for the student's Advisory teacher and yourself. Help each other out and get those kids on the list on time.Β
Mice!:
All, not shockingly, we have mice in the building. We are right on the mountain, and the building has been essentially an open door for two years while workers have been eating and leaving messes around for them to feast on. They did not move out simply because we moved in. The reason I even bring it up is that we all need to be conscientious about it and make sure we're keeping food in plastic containers with lids and that the lids are closed. Let's not make things any more inviting than the little rascals already think things are.Β
A Few To-dos:
HB396 plan is due by September 30.
PG&e Goals and Self-evaluation are due ASAP.
Vector trainings need to be completed ASAP.
Get PLC Lead names to Josh L.Β
Cell Phones:
We need to be consistent on cell phones starting now. One thing that's very easy for us to see as we walk around now is kids on phones because we can see in all the classrooms.Β
One reminder is students should only have Chromebooks out and open when they are actively using them for classwork. I have already been seeing many students using the open Chromebook to block the teacher from seeing them on their phone.Β
Releasing Classes Early:
Please don't release classes early. We heard today that some teachers might be under the impression that students who have a hall pass are excused five minutes before the bell so they can get to the bus. This is NOT the case, and is NOT accurate. The only kids who would leave class early to get to a bus are GTI students who need to leave 2nd period a bit early to make it to the GTI bus.Β
Please keep kids in their seats and actively working on something until the bell. Allowing them to congregate at the door for the last few minutes of class is just setting them up to start sneaking out of your class early and be in the halls.
Phone Numbers:
I know cell service is a hit or miss in the building, but everyone should have our numbers in their phones. Speaking for myself- a text is a much quicker way to get a response from me than a Teams Message.

Hall Passes:
We are making a concerted effort to be checking halls and making sure students have hall passes. Please make sure you're using hall passes with your students and that you remember a few guidelines for them:
They need to have the hall pass with them and visible
Only one student per hall pass
Please govern the hall passes so students are not taking advantage of them. You should be tracking who takes them, how frequently, and how long they're gone when they use one. Best practice would be to limit the number of times each quarter a student can use a hall pass.Β
