Course Descriptions

DRAWING

DRAWING 1 (502001) 

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This class introduces students to basic drawing and design principles. Emphasis is placed upon representative and interpretive drawing using pencil and ink. Students will explore perspective and learn the fundamentals of drawing through the study of a variety of subjects observed from life and photographs. Basic portrait drawing will be covered as well. 

DRAWING 2 (502101) 

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Drawing 1

This is an intermediate basic drawing and design principles class. Emphasis is placed upon representative and interpretive drawing using pencil and ink. Students will explore perspective and learn the fundamentals of drawing through the study of a variety of subjects.

DRAWING 3 (502450)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Prerequisite: Drawing 2

Advanced students pursue self-selected concentration projects as they complete portfolios and prepare artwork for art shows and competitions. Some reading and writing is required.

AP DRAWING (502500)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

AP Drawing is an introductory college-level drawing course. Students refine and apply skills and ideas they develop throughout the course to produce drawings.

BASIC DRAWING 1020 (708221) CE 

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

A great way to earn college credit.  This class introduces students to basic drawing and design principles. Emphasis is placed upon representative and interpretive drawing using pencil and ink. Students will explore perspective and learn the fundamentals of drawing through the study of a variety of subjects observed from life and photographs. Basic portrait drawing will be covered as well.  

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course. 

PAINTING

PAINTING 1 (503001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students are introduced to various painting media, techniques and styles. Instruction helps students utilize such media as watercolor, tempera, acrylics and oil in rendition of a wide range of subjects.

PAINTING 2 (503101)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Painting 1

Students are introduced to various painting media, techniques and styles. Instruction helps students utilize such media as acrylics and oil in rendition of a wide range of subjects. 

PAINTING 3 (503150)

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Painting 2

Advanced students pursue self-selected concentration projects as they complete portfolios and prepare artwork for art shows and competitions. Students are encouraged to experiment with a variety of media and creative approaches to painting. 

CERAMICS

CERAMICS 1 (506001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course provides opportunities for the students to learn refinements and advanced techniques in producing hand-built, wheel-thrown, and sculptural forms of functional, representative and abstract pieces of art.

CERAMICS 2 (506051)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Ceramics 1

This course provides opportunities for the intermediate students to learn refinements and advanced techniques in producing hand- built, wheel-thrown, and sculptural forms of functional, representative and abstract pieces of art.

CERAMICS 3-4 (506100)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Ceramics 2

This course provides opportunities for the more advanced students to learn refinements and advanced techniques in producing hand- built, wheel-thrown, and sculptural forms of functional, representative and abstract pieces of art.

SCULPTURE

SCULPTURE 1 (506401)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students will investigate sculptural themes and demonstrate critical thinking towards aesthetic choices and gain a contemporary understanding of sculpture. This hands-on class will explore traditional materials with a variety of characteristics and properties. Safe building practices and tool use is introduced so students can advance their artistic skill set and understanding as young artists.

SCULPTURE 2 (506411)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Sculpture 1

Students will further develop a unique artistic identity and increase confidence through creative expression. They will delve into more complex themes using focused research into historical and social context with projects that span the globe. There will be an increased variety of material experimentation encouraged while advanced building methods will be demonstrated as safe skill sets are emphasized.

3D DESIGN

3D DESIGN 1 (505551)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students are introduced to fundamentals of design, demonstration of various construction techniques spatial solutions and safe tool use. Emphasis is placed on the history and cultural significance of the projects, as well as the end user as they execute functional projects from 2 dimensional plans to 3 dimensional forms. A wide range of materials will be used, mixed media is encouraged and personal style is explored.

3D DESIGN 2 (505551)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Beginning 3D Design 1

Students will incorporate knowledge and skills gained in Beginning 3D Design. As new materials are introduced and technical skills are enhanced individual style will be enhanced as students are given more choice to achieve their artistic identity, share their narratives and express their vision. Creative processes will be explored to emphasize research based practices and how to improve the projects as they make their artwork.

3D DESIGN 3-4 (505600)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Beginning 3D Design 1

Extended experience in the production of two-and three-dimensional 3-D Design is provided in this course as students explore the diverse range of media comprising this vast area of creative expression.

AP 3D DESIGN STUDIO ART (502580)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Prerequisite: 3D Design Art, Sculpture, or Ceramics

This course is intended for students who wish to develop a portfolio that illustrates decision making about how to use the elements and principles of art as they relate to the integration of depth, space, volume, and surface. Students’ portfolios will demonstrate mastery of 3D design through any three-dimensional approach, including, but not limited to: figurative or nonfigurative sculpture, architectural models, metal work, ceramics, installation, assemblage and 3-D fabric/fiber arts. 

OTHER

EXPLORATORY ART 1010 (708201) CE*

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Students receive guidance in self-expression by exploring art history, drawing, print making, and painting. We will cover subjects like landscapes, portraits, figure studies, and still life. Students work on creating art portfolios for submission to art shows and scholarships applications.

JEWELRY 1 (505851)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students will explore aesthetic cultural trends of personal adornment throughout history. Basic construction of jewelry focuses on satisfaction of the end user and functional application of their work. Craftsmanship is honed during use of bead and pendant design and construction, wire design and simple casting techniques. Personal style and artistic processes will be uncovered as artistic confidence emerges with each project.

DESIGN 1120 (708241) CE*
