Course Descriptions

FITNESS FOR LIFE (606301)  

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Required for Graduation

This required course is designed to help each student adopt a personal lifestyle of regular physical fitness. The focus is on selecting activities for fitness on an individual and group basis.

PE 9 (606201)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students will be college and career ready, as demonstrated by the ability to plan and implement different types of personal fitness programs, demonstrate competency in lifetime activities, describe key concepts associated with successful participation in physical activity, model responsible behavior while engaged in physical activity, and fill a need for self-expression, challenge, social interaction and enjoyment.

SPORTS FOR FUN  (606401)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course offers students the opportunity to engage in beginning sports play. Students will learn proper rules, team strategies, and functional play of a variety of sport activities. Course activities will include, but are not limited to basketball, volleyball, softball, and soccer. Notes and quizzes are possible.

BASKETBALL/FLAG FOOTBALL (606402)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course offers students the opportunity to engage in beginning sports play. Students will learn proper rules, team strategies, and functional play of Basketball and Flag Football. 

RAQUET/NET SPORTS (606403)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course offers students the opportunity to engage in beginning sports play. Students will learn proper rules, team strategies, and functional play of a variety of racquet/net sport activities. 

BEGINNING SOCCER (606404)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course offers the basic instruction in technique, strategies, rules, and enjoyment of soccer. No varsity soccer players are permitted to take this class. The purpose of this course is to help introduce students to soccer and the fitness benefits that go with it. Students will be introduced not only to skills but playing outdoor soccer, indoor soccer, and futsal. There are no prerequisites required for this class. The emphasis of this course will be on developing individual and team skills and tactics through skill specific drills and game play. MAJOR THEMES: passing, dribbling, shooting, footwork, positions/game play.

BEGINNING SWIMMING (607001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Basic water skills are taught along with development of the basic strokes and lap swim.

BEGINNING WEIGHTS (606801)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

For beginners only. This class is for students with little or no experience in the weight room. This class will teach the strengthening of muscle groups and the development of lifting programs to keep students physically fitness. 

ADVANCED WEIGHTS (606806)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Beginning Weight Training

Students will be expected to apply knowledge gained in beginning weights to create and manage their own personal plan and being self- driven throughout their work.

YOGA (606471)

Length:  Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students will learn about the limbs of yoga, anti-anxiety tips, breathwork, meditation techniques, and chakras. We will explore a variety of poses ranging from simplistic stretches to peak poses. This class is meant to be a period where students feel safe, respected, and calm.

COMPETITIVE ATHLETICS

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course is offered to any student who is currently on an athletic team or has aspirations of trying out for an athletic team at Cyprus. This upcoming year, student athletes that take this class will also be signed up to take an athletic independent study and a weights class during the same period. The timing of the athletic season will determine which section student athletes will be attending. Student athletes that sign up for this class should expect to take the class for an entire year to help prepare them for their current season and future athletic seasons.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING - MEN (607060)

This class is offered during 1B.

This course is offered to any student who is currently on the swimming team or has aspirations of trying out for the swimming team at Cyprus.  The course will focus on aerobic and anaerobic conditioning in the pool; technical aspects of the competition strokes; improving strength, athleticism and feel for the water; and mental and academic skills vital to swimming fast.  Student athletes that sign up for this class should expect to take the class for an entire year to help prepare them for their current and future seasons.

DANCE 1A: BEGINNING DANCE (5000001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

This dance course builds dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression and meaning, performance, history and elements of dance. Within this class, we work on building movement vocabulary, investigating the creative process, and developing individual and group choreography. This class will NOT perform in a concert.

DANCE 1B: HIP HOP (500111)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

In this class, students will work on building movement vocabulary, technique proficiency, learning the history of hip hop through various hip hop styles, and developing individual and group choreography/improv through the elements of dance. This class will perform in one concert during the semester. 

BEGINNING SOCIAL DANCE (500311)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Students acquire physical, rhythmic and creative skills through dance activity. This course offers instruction in traditional and contemporary dance activities that students may use in life.

DANCE 1010 (708301) CE*

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Fee: Concurrent Enrollment fees through Weber State University

An introduction to dance providing a knowledge base from which to experience dance from a variety of viewpoints: historically, culturally, aesthetically, critically, and creatively. This course takes a close-up look at the rules, messages, and meanings embodied in dance around the world. This is a writing intensive course. Students are expected to attend dance concerts and cultural dance experiences outside regularly scheduled class time. No dance experience required. 

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course. 

DANCE 2 (500100)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Prerequisite: Beginning dance or equivalent or teacher approval

This class builds on the fundamentals of dance, including technique proficiency, exploring the elements of dance, choreography/improv, and movement expression. Within this class, we work on building movement vocabulary, investigating the creative process, and developing individual and group choreography. This class will perform at TWO concerts throughout the year.

DANCE 3 (500200)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Prerequisite: Dance 2 or equivalent or teacher approval

This class builds on the fundamentals of dance, including technique proficiency, exploring the elements of dance, choreography/improv, and movement expression. This class will perform at TWO concerts throughout the year and may have the opportunity to attend an off campus workshop with Dance Company taking master classes from dance professionals.

CYPRUS DANCE ENSEMBLE/DANCE 4 (500250)

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Audition Only

Dance 4 (9th-12th *Audition Only): This class will focus on technique proficiency and building dance vocabulary.  In this class, students will work on maintaining and improving their technique.  *Must have auditioned for either Dance Company or Drill.  

DANCE COMPANY (607500) 

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Audition Only

Dance Company is a choreography/performance dance group. The focus of Dance Company is on dance as an art form with an emphasis on contemporary/modern dance. Dance Company has a required state core that works on building dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas.
