DEBATE

DEBATE 1 (570701)

This course is designed to train student to perform in competitive public speaking events sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association. Instruction includes the components of successful public speaking and experience in actual competitive situations through participating in forensics meets held at Utah high schools and universities.

This course is designed to trains student to perform in competitive public speaking events sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association. Instruction includes the components of successful public speaking and experience in actual competitive situations through participating in forensics meets held at Utah high schools and universities. Students who sign up MUST be willing to compete with the team at least twice per quarter, including evenings and Saturdays. Students must maintain academic (2.5 GPA and no more than one F) and citizenship (no more than one O) eligibility throughout the year. Once the student has accumulated sufficient points in competitive events, life-time membership in the National Forensics League will be offered to the student for a fee of $15.00. After-school practices will be required. Participation in fund-raisers and team activities will be encouraged.

DEBATE 3-4 (570730)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Debate 1-2

Can count for 12th grade English

This class will function as the varsity Debate team. A unified team concept will be stressed. Varsity team members will be asked to set a positive example for the novice members and share their experience. Advanced study in all areas of competitive speech will be presented. Team members must maintain academic (2.5 GPA and no more than one F) and citizenship (no more than one 0) eligibility throughout the year. Students are also required to compete twice per quarter and attend 4 after-school practices per quarter. Varsity debaters will be expected to help novices at after-school practices. Participation in fund-raisers and team activities will be encouraged.

Advanced speech and debate techniques are practiced, and competition is required. The debate teams develop from this class

Peer Leadership is an elective course that is designed to help you become a great leader and person. Our primary focus is to help promote a positive school culture, and to be a great student and friend. We do this through planning and attending school events, collaborating as a team, promoting positivity, cheering on fellow students at events, and much more!

STUDENT BODY OFFICERS

Student Government is a class that you must apply for. Students who are elected are tasked with creating opportunities that will help the student body increase school spirit, connect with the school, and connect with each other. In student government you will help plan assemblies, plan school dances, create activities for homecoming and spirit week, make posters, take pictures, and attend a variety of events. You will also support and promote school teams, clubs, and other amazing things happening at the school.   

LATINOS IN ACTION (691220

Prerequisite: Application only

Latinos in Action (LIA) students serve their community and celebrate Latino cultures. The course takes place during the school day, with some additional service requirements taking place after school. LIA students use their talents to serve others, improve the image of Latinos in the community, and prepare for college. Students travel to elementary schools and work with teachers to help younger children learn.

Students are selected to take this course if they demonstrate maturity or show a knowledge of curriculum that can support their peers.  Students may be asked to be AVID Tutors, Success Course Tutors or can provide support in other types of areas including with students that receive special education services.

PEOPLE OF THE PACIFIC (691230

POP provides a safe place to develop a sense of belonging within your school. Obtain a deeper understanding about your identity as a Pacific Islander, culture, language, values and how to utilize them to contribute to school and community. To achieve this, we will set SMART goals individually and as a People of the Pacific together.

Engage in discussions, activities and service projects that will enhance knowledge and a healthy pride in yourself, school and community. Participate in counseling workshops that will provide step-by-step information and process towards High School graduation. Career and Mentorship opportunities will provide post-grad options, resume building and applications to prepare for the future.

LIBRARY AIDE (694754

Aides earn points for their grades in the library, choosing from a variety of tasks that must be done.  They check in books, sort them, and organize shelves.  They process Chromebooks which involves cleaning, updating, and powerwashing.  They make deliveries throughout the Cyprus campuses.  They can also help with promotional materials, such as designing book advertisements or helping with library thematic decoration and setup, as well as write book reviews using our library cataloguing software.  Each task they complete earns them points, and there are set amounts of points they need to earn for various grades by the end of each quarter.

PSYCHOLOGY

PSYCHOLOGY (585401)

This course introduces the student to the study of the behavior of individuals. It emphasizes the manner in which the individual can apply various psychological theories and concepts to better understand one’s self, one’s motives, and one’s relationship with other people.

AP PSYCHOLOGY (585460)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

AP Psychology is to introduce the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Included is a consideration of the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Students also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

PERFORMANCE/SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY (585491)

This course teaches students how to use psychological knowledge and skills to help athletes perform to their best ability while also looking out for their well-being.  It also examines the impact of sports participation on social development and some of the issues with sports organizations.

Seminary is a worldwide, four-year religious educational program for teens. It is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but is open to teenagers of all faiths. In seminary, students and their teachers meet during the school year to study scripture.

SOCIAL STUDIES

AP MACRO ECONOMICS (586640)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

AP Macroeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination. It also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data. 

HISTORY THROUGH FILM (586231)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grade

This is an elective course for students who are inquisitive and interested in the study of history through social media.  We will use film to approach the history of the United States through major historical periods throughout American history.  Students will explore historical topics and periods using films, outside readings, lectures, and class discussions.  They will work individually and in groups to understand the validity of films as historical sources.

Prerequisite: Application Only

There are over 2,700 students at Cyprus.  It is the yearbook staff’s job to try to document their experiences throughout the school year into a single book.  180 pages filled with football games, debate tournaments, senior quotes, freshman interviews, and prom pictures.  There are several different departments within the yearbook staff:  photography, layout, publicity, and writing.  Yearbook is different from most other classes offered, due to the fact that the students are responsible for creating a product that is being sold.  Students are expected to take the class and their responsibilities seriously.  If a student is unable to meet expectations, they will be removed from the class.
