This class will teach you the basic tools for creating any type of design you can imagine! Develop skills by completing projects focused on the principles and elements of design, understand color psychology and how to use colors together, analyze floor plans, and practice furniture arrangement. This class is perfect for a future designer or the creative student. Learn to design a space you enjoy!

INTERIOR DESIGN 2 (700951)

Prerequisite: Interior Design 1

This class is designed for students to increase their knowledge and develop skills in architecture, house and furniture styles, surface treatments, and the design and function of space of lighting. Students will be involved in hands-on design projects and will create a presentation board with samples for a room they design.

INTERIOR DESIGN 3 (700961)

Length: Semester Available for: 11-12 grades

Prerequisite: Interior Design 2

This course provides students the opportunity to develop industry skills in applying previous content acquired in Interior Design 1 and 2.  Projects are integrated throughout the course to provide students with hands-on application as they explore careers in interior design, programming and design development, design technology, product specification, sustainability, and universal design.  A coordinated project that allows application of interior design skills in a residential commercial, or school setting may be a component of this course.  The study and application of textile and material sciences and technology in this course provide students with laboratory-based experiences that will strengthen their comprehension of concepts and standards outlined in STEM education.  Student leadership and competitive events (FCCLA) may be an integral part of the course.

VIDEO PRODUCTION 1 (701001)

Length: Semester Available for:  9-12 grades

This course is designed to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills related to the video production industry.  This includes instruction and hands-on assignments in the following areas: camera operation, audio systems, lighting systems, pre-production, studio operations, control room operations, visual effects and graphics, and copyright laws. 

VIDEO PRODUCTION 2 (701011)

Length: Semester Available for:  9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Video Production 1

This course is designed for students who want to further enhance their filmmaking knowledge and abilities.  It is an application of the skills learned in Video Production 1 with an additional emphasis on advanced techniques in cinematography, audio production, post-production, and storytelling.  Students are expected to create a portfolio by the end of the course.

BEGINNING FILM PRODUCTION – FLM 1045 (710431) CE* 

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

This is an intensive workshop experience in which students, crewing in their area of specialization, compete the shooting and post- production of projects up to 15 minutes in length. Required of all film majors.

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

FILM MAKING (708280) CE*

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

An intensive hand-on workshop experience which covers the beginning-level process of pre-production, production, and post-production to produce a narrative film.  Through lab demonstration and hands-on practice, students will develop skills by performing script breakdowns, scheduling, setup & operation of compact cinema cameras, lighting, film/video editing, sound mixing, and color grading.

The Fashion Design Merchandising course is an introductory course that teaches the concepts of entry-level business and fashion fundamentals. The following list of skill standards prepares the student in fashion merchandising with the fundamentals of: basic fashion concepts and marketing terminology, fashion cycles, key components of the fashion industry, retail merchandise categories, fashion promotion and fashion careers. This course will introduce students to the exciting, high-tech world of graphic communications. Students will experience first-hand, activities such as computer layout and design, digital imaging, scanning, vinyl-cut graphics, offset printing, and screen printing. Students will generate their own projects, which include note pads, business cards, stickers, t-shirts, etc.  Students will practice activities such as computer layout and design, digital imaging, scanning, vinyl-cut graphics, offset printing, and screen printing. This course is also recommended for students interested in careers in printing, publishing, and graphic design.

GRAPHIC PRINT DESIGN 2 (701151)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Graphics 1

This course is designed to provide students with hands-on experiences relative to the printing industry. The skills of the printing industry will be built upon by giving real world experiences in the areas of digital file preparation, image capture, digital file output, press operations, binding and finishing, and measurement. Students learn job bidding and estimating and work on commercial quality jobs. This course is designed to transition students from school to work through portfolios and resume development, job applications.

GRAPHIC PRINT DESIGN 3 (701161)

This course builds upon the students’ knowledge and skills learned and practiced in Graphic Print Design 1 & 2.  Students will create and produce digital print projects that communicate and promote graphic communication. They will develop knowledge and skills relative to the graphic design & printing industries. This course includes instruction and hands-on experiences in design and layout.

ACCOUNTING 1 (702101)

Students will develop skill beginning with an understanding of the basic elements and concepts of double-entry accounting systems. Skills will include knowledge of the accounting cycle, entering transactions in journals, posting to ledgers, compiling end-of-period worksheets, adjusting and payroll systems, and writing and communication examples. Proficiency of automated accounting procedures is encouraged 

ACCOUNTING 2 (702171

Students will develop advanced skills that build upon those acquired in Accounting I. Additional accounting skills such as reconciling uncollectible accounts, calculating depreciation on assets, interpreting financial information, and calculating notes and interest will be developed. Computerized accounting will again be incorporated as an essential tool where resources are available. 

AP MACRO ECONOMICS (586640)

AP Macroeconomics is a college-level course that introduces students to the principles that apply to an economic system as a whole. The course places particular emphasis on the study of national income and price-level determination. It also develops students’ familiarity with economic performance measures, the financial sector, stabilization policies, economic growth, and international economics. Students learn to use graphs, charts, and data.

Effective management requires decision-making abilities, long-range planning knowledge, human relations expertise, and motivational skills. Students will gain an understanding of the marketing and management principles necessary to start and operate their own business. They will develop an awareness of the opportunities for small business ownership and develop the planning skills needed to open a  small business. Students will become aware of the traits and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. Students will gain an awareness of knowledge needed in research, planning and regulations affecting the small business and the means of financing a small business. They will understand the specific strategies of business management and marketing and the economic role of the entrepreneur in the market system.

This Business Communications I course can count towards twelfth grade English credit. This introductory course will teach students to communicate in a clear, courteous, concise, complete and correct manner on both the personal and professional levels. The goal of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to learn a solid communication base so they can communicate effectively.

This Digital Business Applications course will provide students with their require Digital Literacy credit. The focus of this course is for students to gain an understanding of the skills, aptitudes, and thought processes necessary to achieve customer satisfaction and loyalty in a variety of settings. Students will learn and develop customer service strategies as well as the skills and abilities necessary for working with customers. This will include helping customers to make decisions as well as resolving concerns and issues that may arise. Students taking Customer Service should have the opportunity to participate in DECA (marketing student leadership association). DECA curriculum and activities are state approved for all marketing courses.

This Digital Marketing course is designed to give students a general background in digital marketing and an introduction to the rapidly growing and evolving career field. This course is designed to introduce students to the breadth of the field of computer science through an exploration of engaging and accessible topics. The course focuses on the conceptual ideas of computing and helps students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The goal of Exploring Computer Science is to develop in students the computational thinking practices of algorithm development, problem solving, and programming within the context of problems that are relevant to the lives of today’s students. Students will also be introduced to topics such as artificial intelligence, web development, programming, and physical computing.

AP COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES (702900)

This course fulfills the 0.5 Digital Studies graduation requirement.      

This year-long course introduces students to the breadth of the field of computer science. In this course, students will learn to design and evaluate solutions and to apply computer science to solve problems through the development of algorithms and programs. They will incorporate abstraction into programs and use data to discover new knowledge. Students will also explain how computing innovations and computing systems, including the Internet, work, explore their potential impacts, and contribute to a computing culture that is collaborative and ethical. It is important to note that the AP Computer Science Principles course does not have a designated programming language. Teachers have the flexibility to choose a programming language(s) that is most appropriate for their students to use in the classroom.

AP COMPUTER SCIENCE A (702690)

This year-long course introduces students to computer science through programming. Fundamental topics in this course include the design of solutions to problems, the use of data structures to organize large sets of data, the development and implementation of algorithms to process data and discover new information, the analysis of potential solutions, and the ethical and social implications of computing systems. The course emphasizes object-oriented programming and design using the Java programming language.

COMPUTER SCIENCE PRINCIPLES (702911)

This course will provide students with their required Digital Literacy credit.

This course emphasizes the principles of computer science rather than just programming. Big ideas include creativity, abstraction, data and information, algorithms, internet, and computing. 

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 1 (702603)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

An introduction to computer programming/software engineering and applications.  This course introduces students to the fundamentals of computer programming, to simple control and data structures, to basic operating system commands, and to the use of text files. Students will learn to design, code, and test their own programs. Students will also apply mathematical skills throughout the course. It is recommended that teachers use the Scheme system for teaching this first semester of computer Programming. A skill certification exam is not available for this one semester course - see below. 

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING 2 (702608)

Prerequisite: Computer Programming 1

An intermediate class in computer programming/software engineering and applications.  Reviews and builds on the concepts introduced in CPI/A. Introduces students to more complex data structures and their uses, including sequential files, arrays, classes, and recursive processes. Students will learn to create more powerful programs.

WEB DEVELOPMENT 1 (702802)

This course fulfills the 0.5 Digital Studies graduation requirement.

This course will guide students in a project-based environment in the development of up-to-date concepts and skills that are used in the development of today’s websites. Students will learn the fundamentals of how the Internet works. They will learn and use the basic building blocks of the World Wide Web: HTML5 coding and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Students follow the steps to create a website by planning, designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining of the website projects. Students will learn and use different scripting technologies to create more dynamic and interactive websites. They will learn what it takes for a career in web development as they complete projects and create their own website(s).

Note: Web Development 1 and Web Development 2 may be combined into a one-semester, two-period course offered at the GTI.

TEACHING AS A PROFESSION 1 (703121)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course is designed to introduce students to the role and positive influence of an effective educator.  Students will explore various careers in education and develop employability skills to become a successful professional.  Students will understand the value of multiculturalism and diversity in the classroom and how it enhances individual student learning.  Students will identify instructional strategies and understand the role of technology and feedback in student engagement.

PRE-K: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

CHILD DEVELOPMENT (703001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This class includes the study of children and their growth and development as they move through the various stages of life. Students will receive practical, usable skills to assist them in becoming better prepared caregivers, siblings, parents, and citizens. Caring for the electronic baby will be a required part of this course. Topics include: parenting, genetics, pregnancy & birth, newborns, toddlers, preschoolers, and discipline.

This course prepares students for child related careers such as teaching and child care, as well as more in-depth preparation for parenting young children. Developing employment skills, creating activities appropriate for children of different ages, and designing curriculum are emphasized. Observing and working with children will be part of the class. This is a must for anyone interested in elementary education or having a career with children!

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION 2 (703061)

Prerequisite: Child Development and Early Childhood Education 1

This term course provides students an opportunity to work with children in a professional lab setting. Instructions given include applying developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) and teaching lessons to children, maintaining a healthy environment for children, and developing positive relationships with children. On-site lab experiences will be a major component of the course. Students will continue preparing for the Child Development Associate Credential (CDA). This class may be repeated as students work to complete their CDA requirements.

This course is required for 0.5 Financial Literacy Credit.      

This course is designed to teach students about the choices and challenges of today’s market. It will prepare students for adulthood by giving them a better understanding of personal finance and how to make informed monetary decisions.  Students will realize their potential for personal wealth, as well as how to foster a stronger state and national economy. It will include information about becoming a wise and knowledgeable consumer, saver, investor, user of credit, money manager, citizen and member of a global workforce and society.

HEALTH SCIENCE

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY (710860) CE

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Course format is lecture supplemented with videos and discussion covering medical word roots, suffixes, and prefixes. Emphasis is placed on pronunciation, spelling, and proper usage of medical terms. Medical abbreviations are also introduced.   Students will have the opportunity to take this as a regular class or for concurrent enrollment credit.

This course is designed to teach students components of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine by exploring topics such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, injury evaluation, nutrition, rehabilitation, and sports psychology. The course also includes many taping procedure labs and other hands-on activities. Extracurricular opportunities such as Future Doctors and job shadowing externships, allow students to further investigate areas of medicine.

PERFORMANCE/SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY (585491)

Elective credit only

This course teaches students how to use psychological knowledge and skills to help athletes perform to their best ability while also looking out for their well-being.  It also examines the impact of sports participation on social development and some of the issues with sports organizations.

HEALTH SCIENCES INTERNSHIP (706021)

Prerequisite: Students must be enrolled in or have taken a class within the CTE Health Sciences Pathway. 

The Internship is learning and assisting with day to day tasks for the Athletic Trainer, Athletic Director and coaches. Students learn various ways to tape, evaluate and prepare for clinic hours, practices and game days. Students will also work on their resumes, job interview skills, LinkedIn profiles and do research into both colleges and careers.

CULINARY ARTS

FOOD AND NUTRITION (700401)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course is designed to focus on the science of food & nutrition. Attention will be given to the selection and preparation of food, as well as personal health and well-being. We will learn about and prepare foods in the following subjects: kitchen basics, carbohydrates, protein, lipids or fats, vitamins & minerals, and MyPlate. Students have the opportunity to earn a food handlers permit to use in a future or current job. Cooking labs strengthen comprehension of concepts and provide hands-on learning experiences.

CULINARY 1 (704701)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Foods and Nutrition 1

This course is designed to teach more advanced concepts of nutrition and culinary arts and builds upon concepts and vocabulary learned in foods 1. Students will learn about consumerism, etiquette, sports nutrition, and nutrition guidelines throughout the lifespan. Frequent cooking labs will provide opportunities to demonstrate skills learned in preparing sauces, soups, salads, yeast breads, pastries, meats, and more! Students will explore careers in culinary arts and can progress onto ProStart at the GTI after completing this class.

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE INTRO (713001)

Length: Semester Available for:  9-12 grades

This course is an introduction to the Behavioral Health industry. Topics that will be introduced in this foundational level course include understanding self-concept, effective communication, healthy relationships, addictive behaviors, mental health disorders, and protective laws and rights of patients and practitioners. *This course is not designed for the student to diagnose themselves, friends, or family. It is an introduction to the behavioral health career field only.

INDIVIDUAL & FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS (713041)

This course includes the study of developing skills to build and maintain a healthy self-concept and effective communication that establish healthy relationships for an individual, family, community, marriage, peers and professionally.  This course will emphasize establishing and maintaining relationships based on effective communication, diverse family systems, characteristics of personal development and the impact of relationships on personal and career connection.

PSYCHOLOGY (585401)

This course introduces the student to the study of the behavior of individuals. It emphasizes the manner in which the individual can apply various psychological theories and concepts to better understand one’s self, one’s motives, and one’s relationship with other people.

AP PSYCHOLOGY (585460)

AP Psychology is to introduce the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Included is a consideration of the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Students also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and practice. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

PERFORMANCE/SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY (585491)

This course teaches students how to use psychological knowledge and skills to help athletes perform to their best ability while also looking out for their well-being.  It also examines the impact of sports participation on social development and some of the issues with sports organizations.

MANUFACTURING & PRODUCTION

WOODS 1 (705101)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Students learn basic woodworking skills and build projects to demonstrate woodworking skills.  Fee covers glue, sandpaper, lacquer, dowels, and safety glasses This amount will vary according to the size of the project and the type of wood selected. One project each term is required. The emphasis of this course is safe hand and power tool operation and basic cabinetry.

WOODS 2 (CABINETMAKING & MILLWORK)- SEMESTER (705121)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Woods 1

This course prepares students to apply technical knowledge and skills needed to create custom cabinets, fine furniture, and architectural millwork. Class content stresses the safe use of trade hand tools and machinery used in the production of millwork items. Furniture and cabinets, such as kitchens and vanities are constructed, finished, and installed as part of the program.

Woods 3 helps students gain a more in-depth understanding of and skill in designing, planning, building, and finishing furniture. The safe and correct use of hand and power equipment will also be taught and emphasized. In this course, students will have the opportunity to design and build a variety of woodworking projects to help them learn and practice these principles.

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

AUTO MECHANICS & REPAIRS

AUTO 1: INTRO TO AUTOMOTIVE (705420)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

A beginning course designed to teach basic automotive knowledge and introduce students to vehicle maintenance. The basic skills taught include oil changes, tire rotations, balancing, fan belts, brakes, battery service, use of hand tools, detailing cars, and to familiarize the student with a car’s general operating systems. This is a fun hands-on class to learn about cars of all types.

AUTO 2: CHASSIS MLR (705440)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Intro to Auto

This course builds upon basic automotive knowledge students have about cars. Over 80% of the work is in the shop customizing/repairing students’ personal vehicles, building show project cars and other fun-filled projects. Anything you can think of we can do in our shop. If you like motorized vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes) and want to learn more, then you need to register for this class.

AUTO 3: AUTOMOTIVE ENGINES MLR (705490)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12  grades       

THIS IS A TWO PERIOD CLASS

Prerequisite: Auto 2 

This course allows students to continue their automotive experience or to build for a future as an automotive technician. This course also works well for those interested in technical/engineering programs in various colleges. Over 85% of the class is in the shop repairing and maintaining motorized vehicles. The class will also go to racing events, the Salt Flats, and various car shows showing students the different sides of the automotive field. If you like cars, trucks, and bikes and like to customize them, you need to enroll in the new and improved Cyprus High automotive classes.
