ENGLISH 9 (567000)

Length: Year Available for: 9 only

Ninth grade English focuses on the Common Core standards: Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language. Curriculum is designed to help students become college and career ready in literacy. Students will read a variety of informational and literary texts and write narrative, informative, and argument papers.

ENGLISH 9 HONORS (568100)

Length: Year Available for: 9 only

A rigorous study of literature and writing. Honors English explores multiple perspectives and ideas concerning Utopia found in literature. A summer reading assignment is required. Curriculum follows the Common Core standards of Reading, Writing, Speaking/Listening, and Language. Honors English is a preparatory course for students interested in AP English.

Students will focus on enjoyment and strengthening skills and strategies necessary for elective communication in literary, functional and informational contexts. Refining and magnifying the skills described in the State Core, they will improve their expertise in reading, writing, listening, viewing and critical thinking.

ENGLISH 10 HONORS (568600)

Length: Year Available for: 10 only

Students will enhance skills and strategies necessary for proficient communication in literary, functional and informational contexts. Magnifying the skills described in the State Core, they will pursue individual literacy interests and projects using creative and critical thinking. 

Minimum Required Workload Expectations: read two novels a term, one class and one independent; write two major writing assignments a term; and additional daily work as assigned.

Students will explore strategies and skills for effective reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and presenting. They will respond to a variety of British, multi-ethnic, and World Literature selections, write in a number of genres, and develop critical thinking skills.

HUMANITIES 1100 (574301) CE*

Length: Semester at the GTI Available for: 12 grade 

Concentrates on all genres of art: dance, music, literature, art--and its connection to culture. This is a college level course and may carry credit   for those who meet the criteria. Prerequisite: See counselor or instructor for information. 

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE (569100)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Prerequisite: Teacher approval

This is a college level course designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Literature test given at the end of the year for college credit. The course involves challenge literature and discussion of literacy criticism as well as intensive writing practice.  Students taking the course will study essay, novel, drama, and poetry forms, and write essays, poetry and do research projects.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION (569150)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

This is a college-level course designed to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement English Language test given at the end of the year for college credit. This course teaches you to break down arguments and rhetorical strategies in mostly non-fiction works. Non-fiction can include speeches, essays, newspaper articles, and more. Hence, throughout the semester you will be developing writing and analysis skills that will extend far beyond the English classroom.

In these courses, students will learn the development of critical literacies-reading, writing, and thinking using methods of knowledge-making. This course promotes awareness of rhetorical strategies as they apply to a variety of sociocultural contexts. 

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

Elective or English 12 Credit (Semester Classes)

COMMUNICATIONS 1010 (708001) CE* 

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Communication principles and practice applied in dyadic, group, written, electronic, and oral presentation assignments. Listening, perception, verbal clarity, nonverbal, diversity, conflict management and interviewing in workplace and interpersonal settings. This class will give you 3 hours of college credit and this is a required class in every school around the country. Get it done in high school.

PUBLIC SPEAKING 1020 (708021) CE* 

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Preparing and delivering speeches, which include informative and persuasive presentations, for civic and professional occasions. Basic theory and skills practice, including audience analysis, anxiety management, critical listening, supporting claims with evidence, persuasion, motivation, and delivery.

JOURNALISM 1 (569511) 

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades      

Journalism 1 is the introductory course. Various aspects of journalism will be explored including writing, editing, civics, and history. Classes will include discussions, workshops, group and individual meetings, writing, photography, revising, and online publishing.

HUMANITIES 1 (708041) CE*

Length: Semester Available for: 12th grade

Course thematically investigates the fundamental and perennial questions of humankind and how human beings relate through culture to their political, religious, social, intellectual, economic, and geographic environments.

CREATIVE WRITING 1 (569351)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Creative Writing is an introduction to different types of writing:  nonfiction, fiction, and poetry.  The goal is to experiment with writing in order to figure out what interests you.  This class emphasizes effort over ability, meaning that if you are willing to put the work in, even if you are not an amazing writer, you can do well in this class.  Have trouble with spelling?  No problem, I can help!  Struggle writing research papers?  Don’t worry, you won’t write one in this class!  

CREATIVE WRITING 2 (569352)

Length: Semester Available for: 11-12 grades

Creative Writing 2 or Advanced Creative Writing is a semester-long course that builds on the skills practiced in Creative Writing. Studying mentor texts and examining a broad range of writing is a critical component in developing students’ creative expression skills. In addition the course focuses on skills necessary for writing fiction, poetry, nonfiction, and drama and student works culminate in a writing portfolio. 

GENERAL FICTION (570902)

Length: Semester Available for: 11-12 grades

General Fiction can count for fourth year English credit. This course focuses on improving reading and writing skills. Using vocabulary, comprehension and interpretation, students will discuss general works of fiction including short story, drama, novel and film. Both writing to learn and process writing will enhance learning and thinking. This course follows the English 12 standards. 

MYSTERY/SUSPENSE (570901)

Length: Semester Available for: 11-12 grades

This course delves into the fundamental elements of storytelling, character development, plot structure, and narrative techniques across various genres within mystery and suspense. Students will analyze classic and contemporary works, examining the ways in which authors use language, symbolism, and theme to convey meaning and captivate readers. Through critical discussions, readings, and writing tasks, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and psychological dimensions of fiction. The course also encourages students to hone their own writing skills, fostering an appreciation for the art of storytelling and the myriad possibilities within the realm of fiction.
