VOCAL MUSIC

MIXED CHOIR- SEMESTER (510601)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

The Mixed Choir is the introductory choir of Cyprus High School. It is a large, non-auditioned choral ensemble comprised of beginning and intermediate singers. The course covers music history, music theory, and introductory vocal pedagogy. Training in sight-singing, choral blend, concert etiquette, and expressivity will be developed throughout the year. Members are mostly underclassmen, though membership is open to any Cyprus High School student, regardless of previous experience.

MIXED CHOIR- YEAR (510600)

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

CONCERT CHOIR (510900)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

This is an advanced choir at the high school level. Members are therefore expected to meet high vocal and musical standards and must be aware of the commitment to attend all rehearsals and programs scheduled throughout the year. Class work and content are increased, and music demanding more vocal maturity, quality and refined musicianship is sung. Attention is given to the improvement of music reading abilities and the understanding of mood, form, and style. Opportunities are available for many performances.

SHOW CHOIR (510100) 

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Audition Only

This is a select choir and consists of approximately 28-32 students. This choir focuses on the performance of the unique idioms of jazz and swing, and it also works on music of a more contemporary nature. Syncopation, improvisation, jazz harmony, etc. are important elements of study, as well as important aspects of contemporary music. There will be choreography added to enhance the performance. Many opportunities for performance are available, but students must be aware of the demanding schedule and commitment to attend all rehearsals and programs arranged throughout the year.

MADRIGALS (510530) 

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Audition Only

This is a small group (generally between 28-32) of selected students who are eager to learn Madrigal and Chamber Choir music and, occasionally, songs of a more contemporary nature, the performance of which requires greater technical precision and artistry. Blending and balancing tone quality is even more complex here than in larger groups. Many opportunities for performance are available, but students must be aware of the demanding schedule and commitment to attend all rehearsals and programs arranged throughout the year.

SIRENS/SMALL ENSEMBLES (510101) 

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Audition Only

Students continue specializing in vocal music. Course content focuses on strengthening vocal production, sensitive musicianship, increased ability to read musical notation and a growing connection with the music of great choral composers. This also refers to select groups such as Chamber Choir, Show Choir, Jazz Singers, etc. Via auditions in May, students may be placed in these select performing groups. Teacher signature required.

MUSIC APPRECIATION

MUSIC APPRECIATION (507211)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course is an introductory survey of Western music. We will study the fundamentals of music as well as its history starting with a plainchant to jazz highlighting and study the lives of music’s most significant contributors from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and American musical styles. Come listen to and learn about music with us. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

MUSIC APPRECIATION 1010 (708321) CE*

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

This course is an introductory survey of Western music. We will study the fundamentals of music as well as its history starting with a plainchant to jazz highlighting and study the lives of music’s most significant contributors from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and American musical styles. Come listen to and learn about music with us. 

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.

DANCE 1A: BEGINNING DANCE (5000001)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

This dance course builds dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression and meaning, performance, history and elements of dance. Within this class, we work on building movement vocabulary, investigating the creative process, and developing individual and group choreography. This class will NOT perform in a concert.

DANCE 1B: HIP HOP (500011)

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

In this class, students will work on building movement vocabulary, technique proficiency, learning the history of hip hop through various hip hop styles, and developing individual and group choreography/improv through the elements of dance. This class will perform in one concert during the semester. 

BEGINNING SOCIAL DANCE (500311)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Students acquire physical, rhythmic and creative skills through dance activity. This course offers instruction in traditional and contemporary dance activities that students may use in life.

DANCE 1010 (708301) CE*

Length: Semester Available for: 10-12 grades

Fee: Concurrent Enrollment fees through Weber State University

An introduction to dance providing a knowledge base from which to experience dance from a variety of viewpoints: historically, culturally, aesthetically, critically, and creatively. This course takes a close-up look at the rules, messages, and meanings embodied in dance around the world. This is a writing intensive course. Students are expected to attend dance concerts and cultural dance experiences outside regularly scheduled class time. No dance experience required.

Prerequisite: Beginning dance or equivalent or teacher approval

This class builds on the fundamentals of dance, including technique proficiency, exploring the elements of dance, choreography/improv, and movement expression. Within this class, we work on building movement vocabulary, investigating the creative process, and developing individual and group choreography. This class will perform at TWO concerts throughout the year.

DANCE 3 (500200)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Prerequisite: Dance 2 or equivalent or teacher approval

This class builds on the fundamentals of dance, including technique proficiency, exploring the elements of dance, choreography/improv, and movement expression. This class will perform at TWO concerts throughout the year and may have the opportunity to attend an off campus workshop with Dance Company taking master classes from dance professionals.

CYPRUS DANCE ENSEMBLE/DANCE 4 (500250)

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

Can count for PE or Art credit.

Audition Only *Must have auditioned for either Dance Company or Drill.  

This class will focus on technique proficiency and building dance vocabulary.  In this class, students will work on maintaining and improving their technique.  

DANCE COMPANY (607500)

Dance Company is a choreography/performance dance group. The focus of Dance Company is on dance as an art form with an emphasis on contemporary/modern dance. Dance Company has a required state core that works on building dance knowledge and skill in technique, improvisation, choreography, artistic expression, performance, history, culture, life skills, and connections to other curricular areas. 

THEATER

THEATER 1: INTRODUCTION (520111)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This course gives students the opportunity to create a character through one-act and three-act plays, and helps students develop expressive use of stage movement and voice. Students learn about children’s theater and producing plays for a performance. Contest work, voice, scenes, and monologues are also covered.

THEATRE 2 (520200)

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Prerequisite: Theater 1 or Teacher Signature

This class builds upon the information covered in Theater 2. It will give students more in-depth coverage of creating a character through one-act and three-act plays, developing expressive use of stage movement and voice. Learn about children’s theater and producing plays for a performance. Contest work, voice, scenes, and monologues are also covered.

THEATRE 3 (520300)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

Prerequisite: Theater 1 or 2A, and 2 or Teacher Signature

This class focuses on directing skills and producing various projects. Learn how to develop a more expressive use of the voice and to create characters as well as work with a group to produce pieces for Region and State festivals. Develop an understanding of specific production areas.

THEATRE 4 (520350)

Audition Only

Students who have an interest in developing acting skills or are considering theatre as a career option should be in this class. Theatre 4 is a fast-paced class that begins by refining auditioning skills, playwriting, producing a one-act for competition, and competitive scene performance. Come and learn about all aspects on and off the stage.

This is an audition only semester class concentrating on combining singing, dancing and acting techniques through single, small ensemble and large ensemble performances for grades 10-12.

INTRO STAGE CREW (691051) 

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Stage Crew 1 or (Beginning): a semester class focusing on the basic foundations of lighting, sound and set design, construction, running crews, and stage management. 

ADVANCED STAGE CREW (691050) 

Length: Year Available for: 10-12 grades

Application Only

In Stage Crew, students learn to design, and construct sets for the school productions. They also learn to operate, program and design sound and lighting for the school productions. They function as the tech support and running crew for any production, assembly or concert. It is expected students who enroll in this class commit time after school hours in addition to time spent in class.

GUITAR I (508511)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

This beginning guitar course provides opportunities for students to develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding through learning to play a guitar. Emphasis will be placed on playing position, tone production, fundamental technique, simultaneous playing and singing, reading music, and composing songs/lyrics. Knowledge and skills will include experiences in singing, creating, playing, listening, and connecting to cultures. Multiple performance opportunities will be provided both in the classroom and in a concert setting. 

GUITAR 2 (508551)

Length: Semester Available for: 9-12 grades

Prerequisite: Guitar 1 

This guitar course provides opportunities for students to further develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding through learning to play a guitar. Students will build upon skills and knowledge from Guitar 1.  

CONCERT BAND (509400)

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

This ensemble is for woodwind and brass instrument players. This course provides opportunities to foster and refine musical expression through instrumental performance, analytical/evaluative skills, and aesthetic judgment. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone, the ability to read music with fluency, the polishing of performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits.

Students may have opportunities to experience the spontaneity of improvisation and the creative process of composing. Multiple performance opportunities will be given including concerts, festivals, solo and ensemble performances, and community events. 

STRING ORCHESTRA (509610) 

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

This ensemble is for string instrument players. This course provides opportunities to foster and refine musical expression through instrumental performance, analytical/evaluative skills, and aesthetic judgment. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone, the ability to read music with fluency, the polishing of performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. Students will hone listening skills and increase their ability to analyze and critique music and music performances. Numerous performance opportunities are given such as concerts, festivals, solo and ensemble performance, and community events. 

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE (508250) 

Length: Year Available for: 9-12 grades

This is an ensemble for percussion players. We play repertoire written for percussion ensemble, drum line, and are the percussion section for the Concert Band. This course provides opportunities to foster and refine musical expression through instrumental performance, analytical/evaluative skills, and aesthetic judgment. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone, the ability to read music with fluency, the polishing of performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. Students will have opportunities to experience the spontaneity of improvisation and the creative process of composing. Multiple performance opportunities will be given including concerts, festivals, solo and ensemble performances, and community events. Percussion experience, piano playing experience, and audition preferred for entrance to this class.

This ensemble is for string instrument players. This course provides opportunities to foster and refine musical expression through instrumental performance, analytical/evaluative skills, and aesthetic judgment. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone, the ability to read music with fluency, the polishing of performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. Students will hone listening skills and increase their ability to analyze and critique music and music performances. Numerous performance opportunities are given such as concerts, festivals, solo and ensemble performance, and community events. Audition is required to register for this ensemble.

JAZZ BAND (508000)

Audition Only

This is a select group for saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass, guitar, and drums. This course provides opportunities to foster and refine musical expression through instrumental performance, analytical/evaluative skills, and aesthetic judgment. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone, the ability to read music with fluency, the polishing of performance skills, team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. Students will have opportunities to experience the spontaneity of improvisation and the creative process of composing. Students will hone listening skills and their ability to analyze and critique music and music performances. Multiple performance opportunities will be given including home football and basketball games, concerts, festivals, solo and ensemble performances, and community events. Audition is required to register for this ensemble.

AP MUSIC THEORY (507180)

Length: Year Available for: 11-12 grades

In this course, you will learn the ins and outs of music. Think of it as the What, Why, and How of music. We will listen to a variety of music, analyze written music, and learn how to create your own music. If you enjoy learning about the “science of music” this is the course for you.
