Course Selection

2024-2025

Tips to Completing Course Selection

1.  Get help making your selections.

Include your parents/guardians in your selections. You may also consult your teachers, counselor, or other trusted adults about course options.

2.  Take the time to explore all options.

Look at options to prepare you for college and/or for possible careers. Look for classes that you have an interest in or passion for. Look at graduation requirements and post-high options.

3.  Make sure you are on track to graduate.

Graduation Requirements

If you failed any classes, it’s time to catch up in summer school and next year.

4.  Choose classes that will challenge you, but not overwhelm you.

Find a schedule to support your goals and is manageable with other responsibilities in your life, such as extracurricular activities, work, and family.

5.  Get involved!

School will be more meaningful if you play a sport, join the arts, be part of a club, or get involved in other ways.  Look at our audition courses and UHSAA competitive activities.

Vocabulary

ACT test.  A standardized test all 11th graders take to demonstrate college readiness each spring.

The ACT is a standardized test designed to show colleges how prepared you are for higher education by measuring your reading comprehension, knowledge of writing conventions, and computational skills, and then comparing you to the rest of the high school students who take it.

The exam essentially serves as a nationwide college admissions test (though it's far from the only factor schools consider when looking to admit students).

Most four-year schools require applicants to submit either ACT or SAT scores (they don't distinguish between the two), which can then make up as much as 50% of the admission decision. A strong standardized test score is a key part of your application.

There are also a lot of students who are required to take the ACT by their high school. Utah uses the ACT as a statewide assessment test, so every junior at a public school takes the ACT.

AP- Advanced Placement.  Pass an exam at the end of the year and get college credit.

AP courses are college level courses you can take in high school. AP exams given at the end of a course generate college credit with a passing score. All students are eligible to take AP courses. Results are not used for college admissions, but they may be used for placement and college credit.  You need a score of three or above to receive college credit.

*It costs $98 to take an AP test. There is test fee waiver that will be provided in your classes. If you do not qualify for the test fee waiver talk to your counselor for additional aid to cover the test cost.

CE- Concurrent Enrollment.  Take class at Cyprus, but get credit at a local college.

Concurrent Enrollment (CE) means students are enrolled in high school and college courses at the same time. CE courses are offered at all Granite School District high schools and at the GTI. Most of Granite School District CE courses are offered through SLCC with others being offered through Weber State and UVU.

*Students desiring college credit must complete the admissions process for Salt Lake Community College. There is a $5 fee for each credit hour earned. You will earn 3 credit hours per semester. This is a Certificate of Completion course.
