Welcome families! This is week one of our online learning experience! Each Monday we will publish a week of activities for your child to complete throughout the week. Please do these at your own pace. We aim to provide activities you can do with things you already have at home. If you ever have any questions, would like something more specific to your child, or just want to chat please contact with us! If there is anything that isn't working for you, please let us know too. I'm sure we will have some kinks to figure out as we navigate online learning together! Thanks for your patience and support!

Good morning boys and girls!
It wouldn't be a day at school without singing this song at least once! So let's get it out of the way first! We miss hearing your voices sing this each day! :)
We also have a birthday boy in our class this week! The biggest birthday wishes go out to Levi!
Vowels are the letters that stick words together. They are special letters for two big reasons;
1) Theses letters are in every word!
2) They can make two sounds; their name or their sound.
Vowels are fun to play with in words too. Check out this video and song Apple and Bananas.
For this game you need to print out each vowel on a piece of paper and hang it on the wall or spread them out on the floor like we do at school. If you have sticky notes, they work really well! In the video I'll give you a word. When you know what the vowel sound is, hit the letter with your hand or foot!
Words with vowels that say their name
Words with vowels that make their sound
Parents;
If this game is too challenging for your child, try naming the letter or making the letter sound and encourage your child to tap the letter they hear.
Here's some words you can play this game with;
Cat, cut, top, bit, hot, hut, bed, meet, sun, hide, rode, hum, pit, cape, rope, it, at, me
Every Thursday at school we get out our Gratitude Journals and draw and write about things that we are grateful for. Since being home, my son and I have been practicing picking out 5 things each day that make us happy. These don't have to be big things! Today the sun outside is making me happy! Watch the Thankful Book video then grab a pencil and paper. Draw 5 things that are making you happy today. If you can, label these 5 things either by tracing, copying or sounding out the words. (Parents: see the examples below for assistance). When complete, upload a picture of your drawing in the Google Classroom!
Families; In kindergarten there is a wide range of writing abilities as students build their understanding of letters and their sounds. That is okay! Kindergarten is a two year program with a huge amount of growth over those two years!
Some students are learning to form letters. You can print the words with a highlighter, or a light coloured marker and have your child trace over top.
Some students are forming letters on their own but don't yet have a firm knowledge of letters and their sounds. You can write the word for them and have them copy it to their page.
Some students are beginning to connect letters and sounds. If they can recognize some of the sounds they hear they can print them to label their picture.
Some students have a firm knowledge of letters and their sounds and will print the sounds they hear. If they substitute or miss letters in a word, that is OKAY!
There are lots of ways to show numbers. Check out some of the different ways you can show numbers in this video.
Pick a number between 1 and 10. How many different ways can you show it?
Take a picture when you're done.
Draw a birthday cake. How old are you? Draw that number of candles on your cake.
Can you write the numeral? Take a picture when you're done.
Go on a number hunt in your house.
Find 3 different numbers and take pictures of what you find!
Set the table for dinner. How many forks will you need? How many plates?
Take a picture when you're done!
When complete, upload a picture to Google Classroom! Happy counting!
At school, we were counting down the days to spring! We were also checking our gardens at school each day and noticing how they were changing. Here is a familiar book we had read at school about how hard it can be to wait for spring!

No More Snow!
Spring Rain
Flowers are Growing

Butterflies
and Bumblebees suddenly appear!
Go on a hunt around your yard or your neighbourhood. Can you find a sign of spring? Take a picture and share it in Google Classroom.
That's it for this week! Please explore some of the games and apps in 'A Few of Our Favourites'.
Mrs. Rae, our outdoor learning teacher, also left some activities and games in the Google Classroom for you to do at home.
We set up both Raz Kids and Teach Your Monster to Read to your child's reading level. If you are finding either of these too challenging or too easy, please let us know.
Dreambox is a fantastic math game as well that practices many skills and explores math tools we have used this year. Parents you will have to sign up for the free trial for this game. (TIP: It is easier to sign up on a web browser and then use the app).
