Fundraising

How can we fundraise money for the society? 

Societies and communities can fundraise additional money to pay for activities.

This can be done by charging entry for your events. Good fundraising events include:

• Open mic night

• Q&A / theme with a Guest speaker/artist (please note, you will need to fill out a guest speaker form for this and give it to the societies coordinator sign off). 

• Quiz night 

• Bake sale (note: if you're doing a bake sale, you will need to contact your relevant coordinator, and will need to display at least one of these allergy signs). You will also need to give 25 Working day notice, complete the risk assessment form and Health and safety training.

• Workshops (e.g.: How to make something or how to cook something). Please note if you do one of these activities you will need run a risk assessment. 

• Physical workshop or activity (e.g: dance class, limbering class etc)

Where should the money that we fundraise be kept? 

• Any money that is raised by you for the society must be put in your society bank account within the SU. You will need to notify us 25 Working day prior to raising money as it will need to e coded differently if you are raising money for charity.

• You must submit a 'cash payment form' and send it to the societies coordinator. Please see here.  This is to track money going in and out of your society account. 

Raising money for charity

If you wish to fundraise for charity, it must first be authorised by your relevant coordinator. Please note that due to the Union's status as a registered charity, you can only fundraise for UK-registered charities. 

Fundraising for charities must be directed through our Raising and Giving (RAG) account. This means that money will never go into your society or community account, but instead will be put in your RAG account then sent to the charity.

Why?

• Societies and communities cannot give money that already exists in their account to charity due to current UK charity law

• The Union must be able to account for any money we give to other charities. The RAG account means all of the money for charities is labelled correctly and easy to find
