This artifact is a character description activity completed by first-grade students after reading Make Way for Ducklings. Students were asked to choose a character, draw a picture of them, and write about them using details from the story. I used a work sample to see how well students could describe a character and communicate their understanding of the text through both drawing and writing.
This artifact is important to my development as a teacher because it shows how student work can provide evidence of what a student understands. Looking at the student's drawing and writing allowed me to see how they were able to describe a character and communicate their ideas. This experience also helped me understand the importance of using student work to identify areas where students are successful and areas where they may need additional support or instruction.
