Developing upper body strength during our "Wildcat Relay" warm-up. Students are paired with a partner for this activity. One student runs a lap, while the other performs an exercise. The two trade places and play continues.
When doing station rotations, I intentionally incorporate multiple opportunities for students to improve muscular strength and endurance.
This "fitness" version of Monopoly lends itself to various ways for students to increase core and upper body strength.
Students develop physical literacy gradually through a variety of structured activities.
In this game, students magically transform into spiders and build muscles by crawling or "crab walking" to the basketball goal. They also perform push-ups multiple times throughout the activity to develop strength and endurance.
As an incentive to motivate students to improve their upper body strength, I challenged 5th graders to try and do more push ups than me. I promised to purchase candy for every individual who could outperform me on their fitness assessment.
Around mid year, I told them that I had changed my mind and decided to buy candy for every 5th grader who could do HALF as many push ups as me. Ten 5th graders earned their favorite candy for performing 25 push ups or more during the Fitness Gram assessment. Elliott Ruxton was the overall Push Up Champion with a total of 66! Coach Tyner was runner up with 53! I am incredibly proud of these individuals!
