Purpose...
Gives students the opportunity to take an “emotional inventory” of how they’re feeling and practice identifying/naming the feelings they experience
Gives the teacher the ability to gauge how their students are feeling and to put in the appropriate supports to help with both self regulation and co-regulation
Allows for a "teachable" moment about body and emotions
Check-ins can help students set and track specific social, emotional and academic goals
Create a specific area in the classroom or build it into the lesson where students check-in/check-out when they enter or leave the classroom
Visual
Verbal or Interactive Conversation
Electronic
Check-ins can focus on social-emotional elements, such as wellness, emotional status, and social connected-ness
Check-ins may include a focus on academics (ie. assignments, projects) to clarify misconceptions and provide students with additional resources or scaffolding.
Upon entering the classroom, each student checks in with the teacher
The last thing the student does before leaving the classroom is to check out with the teacher.
VISUAL
Students choose a visual image to indicate how they are feeling.
ZONES OF REGULATION
Students name the zone they are in, tell how they are feeling and why
Not all students need direct teaching of the Zones of Regulation to complete check-ins/check-outs. Students can be taught the various zones during the check-ins/check-outs by reviewing the colours of the zones, teaching various feelings associated with each zone, and giving examples of why the student may be in a particular zone.
No student should be in the Red zone in the Learning Support classroom. The TST needs to determine an alternative space for students who are in the Red zone.
INTEROCEPTION
Students can complete a “body scan” and state how each part of their body feels.
EMOJI
Students can choose an character/emoji to identify their feelings
BEAKER ANALOGY
Students can demonstrate the capacity of their body to take on more stressors by indicating "how full or empty" their beaker is
VERBAL/INTERACTIVE
simple prompt to measure or indicate how they are feeling
could use 'thumbs up or down' or 'scale from 1-10'
ELECTRONIC
digital check-in that provides confidentiality for student's thoughts and feelings
supports check-ins from any environment
supports students who would prefer not to check-in with their LCBS teacher in-person
