TIPS:
Provide access to calming music – have headphones available so music doesn’t interrupt other students.
Add artwork – some ideas are nature and landscapes, or culturally-responsive and interest-based photos.
Try out a basket with sensory objects – using and exploring sensory materials can help students who are feeling overstimulated.
Space should be inclusive and accessible to all students – there may be students that need or want to use the space more often but it's important that all students know they are welcome to use it, as well.
Don’t think of if as a “time out” or punishment – there shouldn’t be any stigma associated with the calm down corner. Although you may encourage a child to spend some time in the space when you feel they’re starting to become distressed, the goal is that eventually the child will recognize when they want to be there and will go there on their own in order to self-regulate and calm.
Use proactively – teach students the "why", "when" and "how" in using the space, set clear expectations when introducing to students
