Tick Safety
It's great to be outdoors and to go for hikes on our beautiful trails but you need to be mindful of ticks. Ticks are small, spider-like parasites that feed on blood. They are very common in Nova Scotia, especially in grassy and wooded areas. Ticks are active most of the year. This is what they look like.
Some ticks carry diseases like Lyme disease, so it’s important to check for ticks after being outdoors. To prevent bites, wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and stay on clear paths.
If a tick attaches to your skin, remove it with tweezers and clean the area. Watch for symptoms like a rash or fever and see a doctor or pharmacist if needed. Check for more information here: Nova Scotia Health Tick Service.
