For Educators
Newcomer students are a diverse group with varying linguistic and academic backgrounds. While some arrive fluent in English, others may have limited or no proficiency. However, a lack of English skills should never be mistaken for a lack of intelligence or competencies. Many possess strong literacy in their first language and often speak multiple languages fluently, which can be a tremendous asset in their learning and social integration.
Despite their strengths, newcomer students typically experience some degree of Culture Shock. Adjusting to a new educational system, unfamiliar norms, and different teaching methods can be overwhelming, affecting their well-being, learning, and social connections. Recognizing these challenges is key to providing effective support. Fortunately, all SSRCE schools have EAL Teachers, a Newcomer Settlement Teacher, and YReach School Settlement Staff that will assist you and your students.
