Science and EAL
Although Science may seem universal, it is taught and talked about very differently across languages and cultures. Scientific concepts, classroom routines, lab practices, and even how explanations are structured can vary widely.
For EAL learners, Science adds an extra language layer: subject-specific vocabulary, dense texts, wordy questions, and the need to explain processes and results in English. Hands-on experiments, visuals, demonstrations, and clear language scaffolding help make learning accessible. Challenges may include misunderstanding instructions, limited academic vocabulary, or difficulty showing understanding in writing. Please reach out if you’d like support, strategies, or resources for teaching Science in linguistically diverse classrooms.
