When renting a place, please understand that ...

• Most leases are for 12 months.

• Rent is usually due on the 1st of each month.

• You need to pay a deposit (half a month’s rent) plus your first month’s rent upfront. If you leave the place clean and undamaged, you’ll get your deposit back.

• Some landlords ask for 12 cheques (one for each month) to make sure rent is paid on time.

• Rent usually does not include utilities (electricity, water, heating, Internet), so budget for these extra costs.

• Never pay anything in advance before seeing the place in person or through a verified virtual tour—this helps you avoid scams.
