As we mark the end of our Unit 5 learning journey, Year 2 students performed a spectacular assembly titled "Fantastic Science" to show their inquisitive minds and growing confidence in the transdisciplinary theme, How the World Works. Instead of just reading from books, the students brought science to life by recreating real-world experiences with the states of matter. They impressed the audience with hands-on demonstrations like making Oobleck, testing water density, blowing balloons, and creating bubbles, while explaining the everyday magic behind melting ice cream and the cooling mist of an air diffuser.
The excitement moved from the class to the crowd during an interactive quiz session, where students challenged the audience to answer questions about solids, liquids, and gases. This showcased not only their knowledge but also their fantastic communication skills. The celebration reached its peak with a surprise Year 2 flashmob, where the students danced together to end the journey on a high note. It was a wonderful way to reflect on their learning and show how they’ve started to recognize the science happening in the world all around them!
Alongside their vibrant performance in the "Fantastic Science" Assembly, Year 2 students successfully hosted a Science Fair as the final achievement of their Unit 5 culmination project. Working collaboratively in pairs, the students dedicated weeks to a series of preparation weeks including conducting research, gathering materials, and designing interactive booths. On the day of the event, Year 2 students stepped into their roles as young scientists, confidently demonstrating the fascinating transformations between solids, liquids, and gases to a captivated audience of parents and other Year level students.
The atmosphere was electric as visitors explored the various stations, witnessing experiments like the curious behavior of Rainbow Chacha, Lava Lamp, and making ice cream. What made the event truly special was its interactive nature; guests weren't just spectators, they were invited to roll up their sleeves and try the experiments themselves under the students' guidance. This hands-on engagement highlighted the students' mastery of the subject and their ability to communicate complex concepts with clarity. It was a proud moment for Year 2, showcasing their hard work, scientific inquiry, and the joy of shared discovery!
