What a joy-filled day it was! On Tuesday, June 9th, our school came alive with laughter, excitement, and the universal language of play. The Year 1 Cultural Play Day brought our community together as our students became cultural ambassadors, sharing traditional games from around the globe in the culmination activity to their ‘How We Express Ourselves’ unit.
Working in small groups with teacher support, our students showcased their preparation and enthusiasm. They had researched fascinating facts about their chosen traditional games, uncovering their origins, cultural significance, and variations from across the world. Their dedication paid off beautifully as they confidently demonstrated games, explained rules with clarity, and warmly invited visitors to join in the fun.
Our cultural ambassadors demonstrated impressive skills:
Research excellence - discovering captivating stories behind each game and its cultural roots
Strong communication - explaining traditions and gameplay with confidence and enthusiasm
Teamwork and responsibility - collaborating seamlessly and preparing engaging stations
Our families and community members were amazed by the depth of student knowledge and their genuine passion for sharing these cultural treasures.
Visitors traveled the globe without leaving our school, experiencing an incredible variety of traditional games, including Congklak, Bekel, Tug of War, Rock Paper Scissors (and its fascinating global variations!), Cat's Cradle, Hopscotch, Red Light Green Light, and many more!
The energy was electric as primary students, parents, teachers, and leadership laughed together, learned new skills, and created memories playing alongside our young hosts.
Cultural Play Day reminded us all that play transcends language, borders, and time. Traditional games connect families, communities, and generations, creating joy and unity. Our students beautifully demonstrated that these timeless activities remain powerful tools for bringing people together.
Thank you to all our students for their outstanding preparation and warm hospitality, to the Year 1 teachers for their excellent guidance, and to our school community for coming out to celebrate and play!
