To kick off Semester 2, Year 2 students began their new transdisciplinary unit, “Sharing the Planet,” with an exciting, curiosity-sparking provocation activity: the Mystery Box! Inside the box were a mix of living and non-living items, including rocks, leaves, flowers, toy fruits, a dragonfly specimen, and even a small turtle. Students were invited to explore the box using only their sense of touch, and no peeking allowed!
The classroom buzzed with excitement as students eagerly reached inside, some feeling curious, others a little nervous. After describing what they felt, the teacher revealed each item one by one, and together the class sorted them into living and non-living things. This hands-on experience encouraged students to think critically, make predictions, and share their ideas confidently.
The learning continued beyond the classroom with a living and non-living investigation walk. Students explored different areas of the school, including the classroom, playground, garden, and pond, carefully observing their surroundings and recording their findings. This activity strengthened their observation skills and helped them connect learning to the real world.
To deepen their understanding, students then took part in a school plant tour. Before the walk, they discussed plant names and examined pictures to help them recognise what they might see. During the tour, students impressed us with their knowledge by identifying plants they recognised and asking thoughtful questions about unfamiliar ones. They showed great curiosity about plant appearances and functions, truly demonstrating the spirit of inquiry.
Through these engaging experiences, our Year 2 learners began their journey as young scientists - curious, observant, and eager to learn more about the world they share. This exciting start has set the stage for meaningful discoveries throughout the unit! 🌱
