Year 6 students had a Virtual Camp from Tuesday 26th January to Friday 29th January 2021. The focus of the virtual camp was Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
The Year 6 teachers and specialist teachers put together an educationally enriched schedule, which allowed the Year 6 students acquire and apply knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions, achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. These experiences are useful for the students for the upcoming PYP Exhibitions.
These are some highlights of the Virtual Camp:
PE Session - Creative Movement (Kalif)
The very first activity was PE. We had to create dance movements based on videos shown by the PE teachers. Each group had a leader that would discuss and choose which movement their group would do. We also had an option to do another dance movement outside of the selected movements.
Music - ASMR Makes Harmony (Fausto)
This experience was a unique one. We were separated into groups with leaders, and the leader had to organize the group into making ASMR sound using daily objects. We were able to organize from the least interesting noises into a charming collection of sounds. This activity was fun. We had some issues trying to incorporate the least interesting sound into the best so we settled on the idea of calming, and from there it was smooth sailing.
Art - I Love Myself (Leela)
The session was very enjoyable. It was pretty thoughtful and the activity was actually much deeper than how we thought it would be. We learned a lot from sticking different colored paper on an infra board. It made us realize to love ourselves no matter what. The activity relied heavily on arts and crafts. We had to stick different materials on an infra board and say things such as “I love myself” each time we do something, such as cutting pieces of paper. We would stick paper and other materials in a color that had meaning. It was an amazing experience.
Stress Relieve Museum - Create Stress Relieve (Ayeesha)
One of the many activities in the virtual camp was the stress reliever museum, where we create a stress-reliever, a stress ball, and a glitter jar. There were many difficulties in making them, especially the stress ball. The fact that we had to put flour in the balloon using such a small tube when making it. Some students also either lacked resources such as food coloring or glitter, and some found it ‘hard’ to put together the materials, the difficulties are what made it fun, and I’m sure some teachers can say so for themselves.
Self Awareness - Make a Strength Chain (Darren)
One of the sessions we had during virtual camp was the Self - Awareness Session, we had separated groups and there were 8 Groups. In that session, we were given a stack of paper around four or five sheets of paper, that has sentences related to our strength. We cut all the papers and collect the paper cards and we tape one like a circle and get another paper, and make a circle, but the circles have to be connected, just like a chain! The more we place in our chain, it means that we also have more strengths. This activity can make people be aware of themself after seeing the paper with the sentence and noticing that they actually have a strength. Maybe they place so much paper and it becomes a long chain! They’ll notice that they have lots of strengths!
Virtual Campfire/ Talent Show (Gemma)
During Year 6 Virtual Camp, we got the opportunity to do a lot of really entertaining activities. Some of them being campfires, arts and crafts, exercise, stress relieving activities, and more! However, the one that makes us feel most connected would be the campfire. During the campfire, we listened to a lot of people’s stories, we got the opportunity to share our thoughts and feelings and more! Along with the campfire, we also got to see a bunch of talents during the talent show. We saw magicians, musicians, comedians, and more. We also watched some movies whilst eating snacks provided by the school. It was really fun!
