Service as Action is a tool for MYP students to exercise caring, open-mindedness, collaboration with others to support a sustainable life. This year, MYP students all over the world, including Global Jaya students, face a new challenge with Service as Action, as the Covid-19 pandemic requires them to maintain physical distance during their community service. Therefore, they have to consider the ethical implications in choosing their service activity.
Raihan D. Wijaya from Year 8 continued his service by conducting a series of webinars on PURSUING A NEW HOBBY: KEEPING PETS FOR BEGINNERS. This is his second successful service project during the pandemic. For his first project, he collaboratively worked with his parents to raise funds to help medics purchase hazmat suits. This time, he responded to another challenge people face during the pandemic, i.e., getting bored from staying home and being in front of the screen all the time. He shared his passion for birds, turtles, and fish through his webinars. Friends and acquaintances were enlightened by their online participation. Well done, Raihan!
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is designed for students to enjoy exploring their interests, developing new interests, and developing the attributes of the IB Learner Profile in real-world contexts through individual experiences and collaborative projects. When given proper attention and time, CAS is often the highlight of students’ DP journeys. While the requirements of CAS are more difficult to fulfil during the current pandemic, there are still many ways students can grow through this process. Each month, we will highlight the CAS experience(s) of a different GJS student. This month, we showcase Glanz Einstern Brata from 12A.
Einstern has developed a program for teaching German. He planned the classes using creative, effective, and fun teaching styles and is teaching his students general knowledge about Germany and German culture along the way. This is the same model used in Diploma Programme Language Acquisition subjects. Einstern has developed his German language skills for several years now and, based on his experiences, has developed a program that is both beneficial and engaging for his students. Well done, Einstern!
