In Year 9 Extended math class, students are introduced to the concept of geometric and function transformation. These transformations can be applied in a variety of ways, including designing Batik. As their project, students create a Batik design that represents a province in Indonesia. By using Desmos, students create digital designs that simulate the printing process. Desmos is a website that can be used for graphing functions and drawing polygon
Before working on the project, students need to have a basic understanding of geometric and function transformations. Geometric transformations include translation, reflection, rotation and dilation. Function transformations involve shifting, stretching and compressing functions along the x and y axis.
To begin the project, students choose a province and make a list of things that represent the province. The list will become the inspiration for their Batik design. For example, Aurelie (9A) chose Bali as the province and she used the lotus flower that are sacred symbol that are commonly seen throughout Balinese temple.
After that, students can start by creating a polygon using desmos. Then they can do geometric transformations on the polygon to create their design. For example, they can create a simple shape like square or triangle and apply a series of rotations and reflections to create a more complex design.
Students can also use functions in their design. Some of the functions that they use are linear, quadratic, circle, modulus and trigonometric functions. To apply function transformation, students can use desmos slider tool to adjust the parameter of their function and they also set up the boundaries of the function to get the design that they want.
Once they have created their Batik design, they can use Desmos to color the design using a variety of color schemes. They can experiment with different color palettes and gradients to create a unique and vibrant design.
Based on the students' reflection, this project is challenging but fun and engaging for them. They can explore their creativity in Math and also promote the culture in a province. Here are some of their design :
Pura Luhur lempuyang

A4N is a band based in Jakarta, Indonesia. We were formed in 2023, as a ragtag team of Year 9's who needed something to do. In this short KONTAK article, we will show you a closer look at A4N's members, history, music style, and future plans.
Meet the Members!
Alesha: I play the bass and I’ve been playing since October of 2022. I listen to a wide variety of genres but my heart will forever belong to shoegaze and alternative rock. Currently, I’ve been listening to a lot of Hole and Slowdive.
Attalla: I play the drums for the band and I’ve been playing the drums ever since I was like 10, I can also kinda play the guitar. My favourite band is Radiohead and I listen to a lot of genres such as R&B and Neo Soul.
Aurelio: I play piano and guitar, I am the pianist and rhythm guitarist for A4N. I don’t exactly have a favourite band or genre, I listen to many types of music, mostly pop and rock. I have been playing piano since 2012.
Nadine: I am the lead singer, but I also play as the lead guitarist and sometimes piano. I would switch with Aurelio for piano and guitar. I LOVE LOVEJOY AND MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE ♥️
Our History
We were formed around the time when the Year 9 Assembly was announced. Attalla (Y9C) and Ariq (Y9C) created the idea of a band and signed up to perform. Originally, the band members were Ariq (Y9C), Attalla (Y9C), Nando (Y9C), and Aurelio (Y9C). The original lead singer (Nando) left, and Attalla invited Nadine (Y9B) to join the band. His exact words to invite her were; "Do you want to sing for our band in assembly (praying emoji)? Our singers fell off". And Alesha (Y9C) joined the band because there was an open spot for a bassist. Afterward, A4N was formed with the lead guitarist Ariq, vocalist Nadine, pianist Aurelio, drummer Attalla, and bassist Alesha.
These roles changed the future due to Ariq's disappearance. Currently, the only changes are that the lead vocalist and guitarist is Nadine, however, she and Aurelio often switch between lead and rhythm guitarist.
The band was originally only going to be together for the Year 9 assembly. But after playing “Chamber of Reflections” by Mac DeMarco and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” by Oasis, we decided to continue the band anyway. We played in other events, such as Valentine’s Day and GJS ID, where we performed “The Perfect Pair” by Beebadoobee and “Akad” by Payung Teduh.
Music Style
We currently don't have a music style but we have been focused mostly on rock and indie, so most likely it's that. However, we have prepared a few songs that would not be considered rock or indie, such as Cake By the Ocean by DNCE.
The Future of A4N
A4N are not planning to slow down anytime soon, as we continue to work on practicing our next set of songs to play in the Year 9 Prom, Hawksfest, Aquathlon, and more! We have planned 14 songs to be played in those events combined, and also plan to play outside of school. Just stay tuned folks!
