As a school, we believe passionately in the power of working hand in hand with parents in support of student success. As such, we are committed to providing opportunities for parents to be able to participate in workshops that help them to understand the GJS policies, processes and practices.
On Wednesday, 5th April, the Child Protection team led Primary and Secondary workshops, designed to help parents to understand our Peer on Peer abuse policy.
Published in January 2021, our Peer on Peer Abuse policy outlines our approaches to dealing with peer group interactions that are not aligned with the student code of conduct. Our Peer on Peer Abuse policy is to be considered in connection to our Behaviour policy and our Child Protection policy.
Through this workshop, we aimed to help parents to understand why schools around the world have moved away from ‘Anti-bullying’ policies, towards ‘Peer on Peer Abuse’ policies. We also wanted to demystify our internal processes that are initiated upon receipt of an allegation, as well as help parents to understand the thinking behind our approaches and processes.
In case you were unable to join us for this face-to-face event, the slide deck is available here.
In terms of creating a positive, safe and secure environment where healthy relationships thrive, it is clear that the school, the students and the parents each have a role to play and a valuable contribution to make.
Unpacking this idea further, one of the workshop activities was designed to help parents to explore how each of these stakeholders can work together to create a positive, safe and secure community. The results, captured in the format of Venn diagrams, can be accessed here.
In leaving space for a question and answer session at the end of the workshop, there were several questions regarding the GJS approach to sex education. In addition to the Science curriculum covering physiological aspects of sex education, issues such as self-advocacy, safety and consent are covered in our Secondary Advisory curriculum. We are committed to continuing to provide platforms where the parents and the school can engage together in a dialogue that is in support of student success. Accordingly, there will be a number of parent workshops held in the coming academic year. If you have a particular topic that you would like to see addressed at a workshop, please do feel free to let me know by emailing me at vicki@globaljaya.com
