Year 1 Travel Fair
For the last six weeks, the Year 1 students have inquired about their place in the world. Using Joan Sweeny’s book ‘Me on the Map’ as our guide, we have investigated our home, our street, our town, our city, our province, our island, our country, our continent and finally our world.
The students demonstrated many of IB Learner Profile Attributes as they worked through the summative assessment process:
Spin the Wheel: The students were inquirers as they demonstrated their curiosity and enthusiasm as we began the process by spinning the wheel to reveal a country to research.
Choose a presentation style: The students were then guided through choosing an appropriate medium to present their findings. They were reflective as they were asked to think about whether their presentation strength was speaking or writing. They then chose between creating a poster; writing a booklet; recording a video or doing a live Pack Your Bag demonstration.
Formulate simple questions to aid research: The students were inquirers as they started their research, firstly by applying what they had learnt in English and Indonesian lessons about questions to create their own research questions.
Research and collect information: The students continued being inquirers as they used Pebblego.com, the ‘Little Country’ books and Google with support and supervision by the teachers to collect the information needed.
Create a presentation: The students became communicators as they turned their research findings into their chosen presentation.
Practice and reflect: The students were reflective as they practised their presentation skills in front of their classmates. Their classmates gave feedback using the TAG guidelines (Tell something you liked; Ask a question; Give a suggestion) and the students made any changes necessary.
Present: The students continued being communicators as they confidently took on the role of travel agents and addressed their audience during the Year 1 Travel Fair.
The Year 1 team was extremely proud of the amazing work the Year 1 students created.
