Students love to investigate the world through science experiments. So as part of our fifth unit about
“How the World Works”, students explored and experienced various science activities related to
changing states of matter. Students used the scientific method to record their findings in their UOI
booklet. Students were all engaged in the observation process.
These are the learning engagements:
● Fun Science: As a front loading activity, teachers demonstrated different activities related to the
changing states of matter.
1. Moulding chocolate: Students observed what happens to chocolate when we add heat using an
electric pan. It changes from a solid into liquid. As the chocolate melted, students poured and
spread the chocolate onto a cracker. Then students identified that the chocolate cools
eventually and turns back into a solid.
2. Making popsicles: Students observed how Nutrisari powder dissolves in water using the spoon
and how it will solidify when we put it in the freezer to make popsicles.
3. Water evaporation and condensation: Students observed the process of evaporation and
condensation using the electric jug. The heat that comes from the electric jug makes the water
boil and steam will come out from the electric jug. This process from liquid to gas is called
evaporation. Meanwhile, students could see the process of condensation with that same jug
and a hand mirror. By using the hand mirror, students could see the water droplets form on it.
● Chacha Experiment: Students learned how the coating of the Chacha candy can dissolve in
water. Chacha candy will dissolve quicker in warm water and dissolve slower in cold water.
● Bubble Making: Students learned how to make bubbles using 2 types of soap: dish soap and
body wash, and also sugar. Adding sugar slows evaporation, which makes bubbles last longer.
The bubble pops when the water trapped between layers of soap dries up (evaporates).
Students found out that bubbles made with body wash last longer than bubbles made with dish
soap.
Online Learning:
During the online learning journey, Year 2 students have continued to conduct their own science
experiments at home and have added them to Seesaw.
As we are fighting this virus pandemic, Year 2 is still doing their learning excitedly from home. They are so eager to do their work and their favorite time during online learning is the Google Meet Morning Meeting. They can see each other and talk to each other about the lesson and other things. It is not always smooth sailing when doing online learning. We are facing difficulties that we need to overcome by learning from our experiences. This is a great opportunity for us to practice perseverance and critical thinking.
In our new and final unit of the year, How We Express Ourselves, Year 2 students are learning about how media can be used to express and communicate messages. Our first week went well. During our virtual small group sessions, students read books and shared their thoughts about the book, such as what message the book is trying to send or why they like the book. They also explored, planned and created their very own mini books. Books ranged from story books with pictures to pop up books. Students recorded themselves when reading the book, took pictures, and shared it to their teachers and friends through the Seesaw application.
During English, Year 2 is learning how to make text-to-self connections. Text-to-self connections happen when a part of a book reminds us of something that has happened in our lives. Students read their book of choice and then made a text-to-self connection. They also developed their tech skills on Seesaw during this activity. This is integrated with our current unit of inquiry around Storytelling, as we discover that we each have experiences that can be shared with others through stories.
Students and supportive parents are showing their greatest effort managing all the advantages and challenges of online learning during this time. Be safe and keep healthy everyone!
