During our unit ‘Where We Are in Place and Time’, the students have enjoyed learning about new technology and also using technology to enhance their learning.
Learning about technology
Pak Dan and his dynamic Year 6 helpers came to Year 1 to introduce a new application on the iPads – Keynote. Keynote is a presentation tool, by the end of the lesson, the students had discovered how to add a new slide; insert text and a picture or video and animate the different elements on the slide.
Learning through technology
Keynote
The students used the Keynote app to create a Personal Travel Journal slideshow about the places they have visited.
Google Street View
The students used Google Street View to try and find their own streets and then compare the map they had drawn with the image on the computer.
Google Earth
The students were very excited to explore different landmarks around the world using Google Earth. We visited the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Pyramids and the Sydney Opera House.
VR Goggles
Riding rollercoasters, walking with elephants, taking a camel ride around the Egyptian pyramids, swimming with the fishes, walking down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, riding in a gondola, taking a tram in San Francisco, seeing the sights in London, Rome and New York. These are just a few of the experiences our Year 1 students have had all without leaving the classroom. How you may ask? We used virtual reality headsets to view a variety of 360° virtual reality videos. This allowed the students to be fully engaged and immersed in the various places.
