COping with Covid: Poems
By: Students in Ms. Cone's Drama Class
“Dear Me?”
“Who am I?”
It’s about time you asked.
Because there once was a time where no one knew.
Once upon a time,
Our world went silent.
Although that seems impossible for such a “wondrous” generation,
It happened.
There once was a time,
Where our earth stopped breathing.
It’s long,
Calm breaths.
And at this time,
Everyone was lost.
Lost in the same maze
But no one could get out.
You'd think,
“Oh, they were all geniuses,
Couldn’t they find a way out?”
The answer is: no.
Not the most brilliant scientist,
Nor the most educated doctor,
Could escape,
This maze.
This maze challenged us to think,
Think past our worries,
Past our struggles,
Straight towards the light at the end of the tunnel.
Yet, there is no ending,
Not yet.
Because only one person could see that light,
That is, of course you.
So now,
It is your duty,
To do everything you can,
To get everyone out of that maze.
Even though some will never come back out of that maze,
We
the people of hope,
Will write the end to this story.
Together.
~Ayona J.
There was a sad pandemic
And everyone was really pathetic
We ran out of toilet paper
And hand sanitizer, too
And gosh darn corona was worse than the flu
~Logan B.
Before the Virus
Before the big worry
Families barely spent any time together
We were so caught up in our devices
But, when corona virus came
Families drew closer
Kids listened to their parents more
They were scared of what might happen if they got it
Thank you corona virus, for bringing us closer together
~Nina L.
Dear Future Self,
You do not need to be rich and famous
Just be yourself and follow your dreams
You don’t need to be like other people
And you do not need to follow the Lego instructions or run fast
If you don’t want to be a fire fighter, don’t be a fire fighter
Just be yourself and always remember you do not have to copy anyone
~Ian G.

Time Capsule 2020
by Brianna T.
My life was so perfect until this virus came in the United States
It was called the COVID-19 virus.
Because of the coronavirus I had to stay inside the house,
the schools were canceled and we didn’t get to see each other and I am very disappointed.
Luckily we have E-learning and we can call each other on Zoom and Hangouts,
I am happy and sad at the same time.
The hospitals are full of sick people and when we go outside we have to wear gloves and masks and we have to keep 6 feet distance from each other.
My birthday is coming up and I have to stay inside,
but my mom and my dad are going to give me a surprise.
My family members can’t come to my house,
But we can video chat and say happy birthday to me online.
I wish this virus would go away because I feel bored and sad,
I wish there was a superhero that can stop the coronavirus.
Till then we have doctors and nurses that can help us feel better.
how will we look back at covid-19?

high school and coronavirus
By: Annabel
During these past few months, all of us have had something canceled. Whether it be not being able to go to school, our school plays, or birthday parties, these are obviously not normal times. I think of things like our own graduation, or the 5th grade picnic, not to mention field trips that our students were unable to go on.
When I think of people I know in high school, this has been magnified even more. Could you imagine being in high school and missing your prom or graduation?
In many ways, the most important things for teens have been canceled. Prom is where most things happen; once prom is over, you know you're one step away from college. This year, the prom queen is covid, and the prom king is -19! Their names together… covid-19!
High school graduation, of course, has been canceled in many ways as well. Sure, students will get to move on from high school and (hopefully) start college in the fall, but they won't be moving the tassles on their graduation caps from one side to the other in person this year.
In some ways, I guess you can say that a senior’s life has been ruined. Some schools and families have gotten creative with distancing or virtual celebrations, but it's not the same. Hopefully, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors won't have to worry.

pros & cons of distance learning
By: Lucy and Sydney
Should schools still be closed for the rest of the year? That’s the question that’s going around a lot this month. We all want to know the answer, and we’re going to give you our opinion on what Governor J.B Pritzker announced.
Pros
First we’re going to be giving you some pros of staying home. First of all; you’d rather stay at home for the few months instead of catching or spreading this virus to anyone, especially babies and elderly people that are at high risk of catching this and dying.
The next pro of staying home is that the experience itself is giving us something to remember, and learn from. It also gives us more time to catch up on work and try something new that we wouldn't have tried before if we were busy with school, and other activities. So now that we are home we have more time to get pets (SYDNEY GOT A DOGGO AND I MIGHT),and do stuff we wouldn’t have thought of doing before all of this happened.
The last pro is this virus is giving us and our families more family time and giving people the time to think of how to give back to all the heroes of this virus. For example now more than ever, lots of families are playing more board games together and really just being together. But this is also great for the really busy kids that didn't have very much family time before this.
Cons
There are more cons for other kids than there are for us. For example, high schoolers that were very focused on graduating are now having a harder time. College students also can’t graduate, and are not able to do as good as they would have in school. In places like high school and college, you should be around teachers and other students physically, so you can get a better experience and have an easier time learning as much as you can.
The next con for staying home is that students are spending a lot more time around electronics. If people use these too much it can be bad for their brains. “It can affect a child’s ability to sleep because the constant visual stimulation doesn’t allow the brain to ‘relax’ – to get into a state where it’s ready to sleep.” Says Dr. Rubrick DO (uchealth.org). So as you can see, we’re having too much screen time every day. Some kids are getting stressed, and having to stay up late to get their work done. This is very bad for their health.
Our last con is homeschool. During this pandemic kids have to do home school, some kids do great when at home, and some… not so much. Kids need to have a social day at school to succeed. It is just better for these kids to have the human interaction, and they are not succeeding right now. Even though there’s zoom, hangouts, house party (YAAAASSS BEST APP EVER!).These kids are really struggling right now.
Our opinion is to stay home! We’d rather have to stay at home for the few months, then get the virus! And to the kids that are currently struggling with their schoolwork, take breaks and give feedback to your teachers they will listen to you!!
injecting disinfectants
By: Brielle
On April 23rd, President Donald Trump suggested that drinking disinfectant could "knock [COVID] out in a minute," sparking a controversy the rest of the evening. The next day he claimed that he was "being sarcastic", which is irresponsible.
Over the next few days, certain states reported a sharp increase in poisoning due to people attempting this suggestion. As if battling coronavirus wasn't bad enough, now doctors had to worry about people drinking laundry detergent!
Lysol parent company Reckitt Benckiser reminded people that "under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be injected into the human body." You might wonder, why would they have to say that? When the President says something, people take it seriously, even if he later says he wasn't.
Let's hope that this is no longer an issue, and that we can continue to focus only on flattening the curve agains the coronavirus, not people drinking bleach.

THE last dance
By: Jillian (with a little help from Mr. P)
On April 19th, NBA fans were rewarded with a special documentary that many thought would never see the light of the day.
"The Last Dance," the ten-part documentary produced by ESPN and Netflix, chronicles the final season of the legendary 1990s Chicago Bulls, and serves as a larger documentary on the greatest basketball player of all time: Michael Jordan.
Jordan, along with Scottie Pippen and coach Phil Jackson, won an astounding six champions together in eight years. While Jordan was almost unanimously the best player of the decade (5 MVPs, need I say more?), Pippen was a legendary Robin to his Batman, being named to the NBA All-Time Top 50 team. Along with teammates like Dennis Rodman, Horace Grant, John Paxson, and Steve Kerr, the Bulls were a dynasty, the kind only even recently rivaled by the likes of the Golden State Warriors.
By 1998, everyone knew the run was coming to an end. The Bulls management made it public that they would be parting ways with Phil Jackson (what?!), and Jordan said he refused to play for anyone else. Tickets became impossible to come by; everyone wanted one last chance to see the greatest player, and perhaps greatest team, of all time.
This ten part documentary is a dream come true for people who watched Michael Jordan and the Bulls the first time around (Mr. P) as well as fans who have learned about him from others and watched clips on YouTube (me).
The documentary, originally scheduled to be released in June, continued last night, and will airs its final episodes next Sunday night.
I don't think I'm alone in saying that this could have easily been a 20-part documentary, and no one would get tired of it!
THE NFL DRAFT
By: Lewk
As a long time tradition the draft has brought amazing players into the NFL from Steve Young to Kyler Murray. But this year things have changed due to Coronavirus.
The NFL had to find a way to do the draft. They did a virtual draft from their homes, the players and the coaches, the player personnel and general managers talk to each other on who they should pick and send it to the NFL commissioner who's announcing what player team picks and whoever got picked. The people watching at home could see the player's reaction.
In the first round the Bengals selected Joe Burrow out of LSU. He was the Heisman trophy winner and champion of the FBS (Football Bowl subdivision). Burrow went 15-0 and won the national championship with the Tigers. Now he gets a shot at turning around the Cincinnati Bengals, who went 2-14 and haven't won a playoff game in three decades. Before Burrow went to LSU he was a backup for Ohio State but then he transferred to LSU. Everyone saw that pick coming, especially considering Andy Dalton's departure.
The second pick from the Washington Redskins selected Chase Young out of Ohio State. He is a dominant defensive end and is the second player in Ohio State that has had double digit sacks.
The third pick was Jeff Okudah from Ohio State. He is a very good cornerback and really helped Ohio State along with Chase Young where they were the best defensive players in college. So that wraps up the first 3 picks. (I am not going to do all 300 picks and notice how all of the players have gone to Ohio State.)
Next year the draft will be in Cleveland, Ohio. So hopefully this year it will actually be in Cleveland, stay home and stay safe.
How are professional sports adapting?
By: Chase
You might have been wondering, what happens to the seasons of baseball and golf? Well, the heads of the PGA Tour and the MLB have been thinking about this since stay at home started. The logistics of a professional sport season are very challenging. However, even an adapted season would be better than no season.
The MLB commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr and MLB officials have been working hard to try to get a season in. They are thinking about doing a 10 team plan with teams only playing teams in their division. This is how they are thinking of aligning the divisions, East: New York Yankees and Mets, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins. Central: Chicago Cubs and White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers. West: Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners. That is not the biggest change though, the biggest change is that to start the season, fans are not allowed to come to games. A big question that has been floating around is will the teams have to start the season in Florida, Texas, or Arizona because coronavirus doesn’t live as long in heat. Now, this season is not a guarantee but MLB is hoping that they can fit a season in.
The PGA commissioner Joseph William Monahan IV and his officials are also working hard to get an adapted season in. Like the MLB, the PGA would have to start the season off with no fans. Probably the biggest golf tournament, the Masters, was supposed to happen in April, and they are hoping that they can play the Masters in June or July, but again with no fans. Hopefully by that time the golfers will not have to social distance, but even if they do have to social distance, any kind of season would be nice. Again, this is not a guarantee but any season is better than no season.
We will see what happens over the next few weeks and months to see if sports can return in the summer. We could certainly use it!

would you rather
By: Henry
Would you rather have to stay in one room the rest of your life, or only be able to say 5 words?
Would you rather only be able to sing, or only be able to dance?
Would you rather have to wear sunglasses, or contacts for the rest of your life? (you would have to keep the same pair of contacts and only wear that pair)
Would you rather have to eat only vegetables for the rest of your life, or only eat meat for the rest of your life?
Would you rather be rich and no one knows you, or famous but poor?
Would you rather make the most useless invention in the world, but be known for it, or invent something amazing, but nobody would know it was you?
Would you rather clap for 1 hour, or stand for 1 hour.
Would you rather have to stand in an ice bath for 10 hours, or take a 24 hour flight to nowhere?
Book of the Week
By: Jillian
The Dream Traveler's Quest
Theo Dunnery, a 5th grader, is literally scared of everything. But when he is being bullied by the school bully (Asher), and finds a magical book called the Book of History, he goes on a quest with HUMONGOUS BATS (I MEAN LIKE WHAT!?!) and overcomes his fears (well most of them that is).
He also gets the chance to kick some butt against these strange creatures called Shataiki (you’ll see why they are strange in the book).
Read this awesome book if you like fantasy and adventure!
