opinion: Female Representation in Video Games
By: Lulu
Have you ever seen girl avatars in videos games? Their clothes, hair, and body may be very different from the men. They often wear crop tops or makeup. I mean who wears makeup to battle? Why can’t girls just wear some armor for once?!
A lot of of video games don’t even have girl avatars. But, what really makes me mad is that in all of the years of having Super Mario Bros, no one has bothered to change Princess Peach from damsel in distress! Why can’t Princess Peach rescue Mario for once!? Just once?
I’m not saying that we haven’t made progress, many video games have realized this and changed this. Many portray strong female characters, but are still often overshadowed by what the characters dress like.
It is important for young girls to feel like they can be represented in the games they are playing. It is time to make more progress in the video game industry!
opinion: Ice Skating is a Sport
By: Madison
I always wonder if ice skating is a sport or not. It is a question that is often asked. Is ice skating a sport? Cheerleading? Well, I guess it's time to find out once and for all.
Ice skating, or figure skating, requires skaters to be athletic and focused. It has duos, or groups, perform on figure skates. In fact, ice figure skating was the first winter sport included in the Olympics, in 1908. The four Olympic disciplines are men’s singles, ladies’ singles, pair skating, and ice dance.
I think it's pretty obvious that ice skating is a sport. What do you think?
opinion: Littering
By: Simi
My first thought about littering is how easy it is to recycle and compost. For those of you that don’t know what it is to recycle or compost, recycling is it convert waste into reusable material. Composting is when you use decayed organic material, or in other words, to use old fruits and vegetables as plant fertilizer. Doing this can help use waste so it doesn't go in the ocean or the dump.
Another one of my thoughts about littering, is that the earth belongs to everyone. The earth is like one big “house”, and we share this “house” with the whole world. When people litter, it is like throwing garbage in some random person’s home. Would you like it if some random person threw trash on the floors of your house? Well, that is what it is like when you litter.
Throwing garbage in the ocean is even worse. Scientists say that in 20-30 years there could be more garbage than animals in the ocean!
My last thought about littering is, how littering is illegal and yet people still litter. Back to that thought about the earth being like a big “house”, if you litter on someone else’s property you would get in trouble. I think that if someone litters they should at least get a ticket, or even go to jail, just so they feel very bad for littering.
In conclusion, I think that people should stop littering. I hope this got the message through your head. I hope you spread the word.
opinion: Plastic in the Oceans
By: Umar
Plastic pollution is very bad for animals and the land, but the ocean is the one that is mostly affected.
If the ocean keeps on getting plastic dumped into it, the people on islands who use handmade machines to convert the salt water to pure clean water will get garbage in their water and who knows what else! Also, if the garbage gets in the ocean the sea animals will think that the trash is food, then if they eat it they can become sick, and that could quickly make the situation very life threatening.
Plastic pollution can include oil and other types of sticky and gooey liquids. If the oil gets into the ocean the shoreline would be covered in oil, and the oil can hurt and kill animals.
Those are some things that pollution does to the earth’s environment. Let's be aware of this to help stop the issue.
Research Corner: CorAL Reefs
By: Izzy and Patrick
Coral is a plant that was made by limestone formations. Most people don’t think it is alive, but it really is!
The main three types of coral reefs are: (1) fringing reefs, (2) barrier reefs, and (3) atolls. Coral is not just one color, in fact, it could be most any color you can imagine. Coral reefs are very important to fish because it can provide a home and protection from predators.
Coral limestone resists damage from big waves and can grow hundreds of yards. Small match reefs only measure a few square miles or kilometers. The biggest and longest coral reefs is about 1,400 miles long (2,300 kilometers). The smallest is 1.5 cm. In one year coral grows only 0.3 to 2 centimeters. It takes about 10,000 year for a coral reef to form.
The most popular coral reefs are Great Barrier Reef, Belize Barrier Reef, Palancar Reef, Raja Ampat, Grand Central Station.
