If you've walked by the LRC during recess, you may have been surprised to see so many students in there each day. Sometimes, it's even pretty loud.
That noise was coming from The Hoffman News Team. Yes, we can be very hectic, but we put that spirit into our writing. We have wonderful, unique members including: Lulu, Siya, Simi, Lindsey, Maria, Madison, Logan, Carlin, Patrick, Grant, Lucy, Brielle, Peyton, Walden, Vahan, Ema, Macy, Nicole, Anthony, Nico, James, Izzy, Isabel, Sydney, and Sonam.
Each member and article is interesting, amazing, and cool. We write about our opinions, events, world news, school news, and sports. The members that have been with us since the beginning of the year have done thirteen editions - if you think about it, that is a lot of hours worth of recess that has been committed to writing for others’ enjoyment, as well as our own. We wouldn't have had it any other way.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves, the real reason we have all this is because of Mr. Pucciarello. He has been nice enough to give up his lunch breaks to help us learn how to write articles and we truly appreciate it.
We also appreciate all of the teachers and students who have read the news throughout the year, and commented on the stories we've worked so hard on. We wouldn't be able to do this without you.
Thank you so much, and we look forward to seeing what great stories come from next year's staff!

Over the past few weeks, the students in Ms. Greene's 3rd grade class have been diving deep into an inquiry of the history of Chicago. Specifically, they've been discovering how Chicago went from a small town of only 200 people to the sprawling city it is today.
Each week, students have been focusing on a specific part of Chicago's history: from its humble beginnings; the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; the importance of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893; through its current status as one of the largest and greatest cities in the world.
Last Thursday, as a celebration of their learning, students collaborated on planning and building a version of their own Chicago using Keva planks (photo 1). Students walked out of the LRC proud of their hard work.
However, overnight, a terrible fire (or, perhaps, Mr. P's left foot) ravaged the city, resulting in devastation and heartbreak (photos 2 & 3).
While students were shocked, they did not let their spirits crumble. Instead, Ms. Greene's students proved their resilience, immediately planning new ways to build their city bigger, better, and stronger (photos 4 & 5).
By the end of two-day simulation, students had synthesized the learning in their inquiry unit in so many ways. For them, it proved to be a worthwhile experience that many said they wished they could have done several other times throughout the year.
For the teachers, it was an inspiring 48-hours watching this group of students work together, overcome adversity, and build something through planning, cooperation, and resilience.
Their final celebration will come later this week, when they will get to visit downtown Chicago with the rest of the 3rd grade!

The Cathedral of Notre Dame is a historic landmark in France. Just a few weeks ago, it caught on fire and half of it burned to the ground. It took the firefighters 12 hours to extinguish the flames. No deaths were reported, but one firefighter was injured.
Notre Dame was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It has held the most famous artwork. It is believed there were paintings that dated back to Jesus’s time period. At the time of the tragic event, the peak of the 12th century cathedral was undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project on the church’s spire when the fire started. That’s what people think caused the fire.
While Notre Dame has suffered, that doesn’t mean all is lost! Firefighters saved most of the art, and most are certain that it can be rebuilt. Notre Dame’s story will go down through history and remain, not a thought, but a last memory for generations to come.

Gun control is the effort to reduce violent crimes by strengthening laws on the ownership of guns. The use of a gun in a crime is much more likely to result in the death of someone than the use of other weapons such as knives. Many people own guns for protection or hunting, or for other genuine reasons. Although guns can be branded for legitimate reasons, guns can also be used to harm and kill people. Gun control laws aim to decrease the criminal use of guns as greatly as possible while trying not to interfere with any acceptable reasons.
To begin with, the federal government and every U.S. state have a few gun control laws. These laws involve two crucial approaches to help reduce gun violence. The first element includes keeping high-risk people from obtaining guns of any kind. The second element prohibits high-risk guns from being used by any person except for the police. Furthermore, high-risk people are those that are likely to misuse guns. They include drug addicts, mentally unstable people, alcoholics, and people with criminal records. State and federal laws forbid these people from owning and using firearms. Additionally, these laws prohibit sales of guns to minors. If this law is enforced more, Earth will adapt into a safer environment with less deaths every year.
Secondly, in the United States and other countries, laws have been changed to give law enforcement officials an opportunity to make sure the purchaser is not a high-risk person. For example, some United States communities require people who wish to own firearms to first get a license. In my opinion, the enforcement of gun control laws isn’t strong enough. Gun control laws should be strongly enforced because enforcing these laws can save many lives. On the other hand, guns can be used as tools for hunting, target shooting or as protection, but I still stick with the fact that guns shall never be given to a person who will use the gun unless they have a license such as hunters and police officers. In 1993, The Brady Bill was passed creating laws about purchasing guns. Moreover, in 1995, Canada’s Parliament voted and decided to require all gun owners to license and register their guns. Many European countries also require revolvers or pistols (handguns) to be licensed and registered. Although they do this, the enforcement of European laws vary greatly.
Lastly, people who oppose gun control argue that taking guns from citizens does not prevent the possession of guns by criminals. World Book states, “Opponents of laws forbidding concealed weapons argue that criminals are less likely to commit crimes if they think their victims may be armed.” In addition, many U.S. citizens argue that gun control laws violate their personal right to own guns. Almost all of these people claim that this right is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment says: “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” In 1939, the United State’s Supreme Court ruled that the amendment does not prohibit most gun control laws. Many people who oppose these rules argue that with guns, they are able to hunt and keep guns for protection, and without them, they don’t feel as protected or safe.
In conclusion, many law-abiding citizens feel protected with guns, as others don’t. People should be mindful about the appropriate usage of guns. In light of some recent, horrific events (for example, the recent school shooting in Colorado), the government and people may need to reconsider the appropriate gun laws. In my opinion, there needs to be a call for action to stop this ruthless violence.

"Ghost"
By: Jason Reynolds
Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons, and it will take courage and help from his coach and teammates to help him run for the right ones.
If you like the tone and theme of Kwame Alexander's "Crossover" series, you'll love "Ghost" and the rest of Reynolds' "Track" series.

Caution: This may be disgusting, insightful...or dangerous!
Would you rather...
Eat ten medium sized burgers or would you rather eat one, huge, jam-packed, juicy burger?
Have a sleek, fast car that runs out of gas or would you rather have a normal car that never runs out of gas?
Eat a peach pit or would you rather eat a napkin?
Have the same thing for lunch every day, over and over or would you rather have a variety but mostly consists of vegetables and fruit?
This has been Would You Rather!!!

This is going to be my last article and I hope you all love it!
Last time I did an article, I did it with Ema and Sonam, I did an article on Candace Cameron-Bure and this week, the April birthday belongs to Emma Watson.
Emma Watson was born on April 15,1990 in Paris, France. That means her birth sign is the Aries. Emma is twenty-nine years old. She has a brother named Alexander Watson. Emma’s parents are Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson. Her parents were British lawyers and divorced in 1995 when Emma was five years old.
Emma has been in many movies. She is most commonly known for playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. J.K. Rowling based Hermione Granger on her younger self. She is also known for playing Belle in the 2017 film "Beauty and The Beast." She played Sam in "The Perks In Being A Wallflower," a 2012 film. She then received a MTV Movie Award for "The Perks In Being A Wallflower." She voiced Princess Pea in "The Tale Of Despereaux." She was in "My Week With Marilyn" and will be in the upcoming "Little Women." Emma has won a Teen Choice Award and a People’s Choice Award.
Emma went to Dragon School in Oxford and attended Stagecoach Theatre Arts School where she starred in many plays. Her favorite subjects were art, history and english and her least favorite subjects were math and geography. She plays field hockey, tennis, rounders and netball. She dances in many styles like break dancing and modern. She also likes to take art classes.
Beyond being an actress, Watson is also a model. In fact, she graced the cover of Vogue in 2011. She has modeled for the Burberry’s Autumn and Winter Campaign in 2009. Finally, Emma Watson’s favorite color is light blue, like her dress in "Beauty and The Beast."
In conclusion, Emma Watson is a very unique person. We wish you a very happy birthday!
I hope you have enjoyed all of our previous articles. It has been so fun working with everyone on the News Team. I hope everyone loves it next year as much as I have. I am going to really miss writing articles for all of you!
