Music
By: Lindsey
This week, I talked to Mr. Banas. Keep working on those note names, third grade, because recorders will begin after winter break. Exciting!
As for fourth grade, they will be having fun learning about different voice types.
And fifth grade, that's right, they're working on their musical! Would you like to hear what it is?! With some breaking news, we are happy to announce that this year's musical is...
...I'm sorry, I can't tell you :)
Drama
By: Carlin
On Friday, I interview Ms. Cone. In third grade, they are focusing on transformation. They are also working on stepping into character as they narrate.
Here's what they're doing in fourth grade: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." They are also stepping into character as an ensemble.
And in fifth grade, we are preparing for a film artist by turning narratives into scripts.
Art
By: Sonam
Recently, I had the opportunity to interview our wonderful art teacher, Mrs. Schober. She gave me an update on what is happening in art.
In third grade, the main focus is organic shape still lifes. Their paintings are also displaying overlapping.
Fourth grade is working on the color wheel in English and in Spanish. Their project involves a mixed-media landscape focusing on the warm and cool color family.
Finally, fifth grade is currently exploring the element of space by creating a surrealist piece of art showcasing, that's right, a rubber duck.
Teachers, parents, and students: if you have any questions about art, you may e-mail Mrs. Schober.

Maria: Hey Hoffman Hornets! There are several people in the school who use free time at the end of the day to help third graders out in the LRC. I have three of them right here: Charlotte, Liyana, and Audrey.
Maria: Why did you choose this job over free time?
Charlotte: I chose this job because I like helping 3rd graders, and you get to see them progressively grow and get to know where more things are. We have less kids needing help from us, which means they're learning, so that’s fun.
Liyana: I agree with Charlotte. Also, I saw this job and just thought 'this sounds like a lot of fun.’ I also like to see what topic and genres they’re reading.
Audrey: You get to see them grow from starting by reading small books to something like Harry Potter. It’s really cool to see them grow and it’s just a fun job. I would recommend it to all your 3rd graders and 4th graders next year who want to help.
Maria: When do you guys meet?
Charlotte: On Friday from 1:25 to 2:20 helping Mr. P and 3rd graders.
Audrey: We just enjoy it and it’s something we look forward to every week, just coming down here and having fun.
Liyana: Seeing their smiling faces and they’re like ‘Oh my god she’s there!’ I’ve gotten that a lot.
Charlotte: It’s also a lot of fun like learning how to find things on Alexandria, especially when there’s this popular book series and everybody’s asking for it. You’re just like ‘I know where that is’ and can quickly stand up and go get it.
Being in the library is now kind of like our home.
Charlotte: I think it’s a lot of fun to like see kids excited to go to the library.
Isabel: Was there something specific that made you want to do this job?
Audrey: It just clicked because I love helping my family members and my younger siblings find books.
Liyana: Yeah, I just think being in the library, checking out books for kids, and helping them cause it just makes you feel better.
Isabel: Did you ever learn anything from this job?
Audrey: Yes, we’ve learned how to check out books, and also Mr. P is really nice, so thank you.
Charlotte: I think we already knew that, Audrey.
Liyana: Yeah, Mr. P is super nice.
Isabel and Maria: Thank you!

Isabel: Hi, Hoffman Hornets! There are a lot of people who dedicate their recess to the library and I have three of them right here: Eliana, Elizabeth, and Lucas.
Vahan: Why did you choose this job over recess?
Eliana: I usually find that I don’t have anything to do at recess and I really like books.
Elizabeth: I don’t have anything to do at recess either, and I like books and the LRC.
Vahan: When do you guys meet?
Eliana and Elizabeth: We come here every Monday at recess.
Lucas: I come here every Monday, Thursday, and Friday.
Elizabeth: It's a great way to help the library when there are lots of books to shelve.
Lucas: It's also another nice way to see your friends, and do something good.
Vahan: What do you basically do to a day to day basis?
Eliana: Usually there are a lot of books on a shelf. We take some of those books, put them in alphabetical order, and put them on the shelves.
Maria: Do you enjoy this job?
Eliana: Yes!
Elizabeth: Yeah, we do enjoy this job.
Lucas: Yes, I like it a lot.
Isabel: Was there something specific that made you want to do this job?
Lucas: Well, my friends pulled me over and said ‘Hey, you'd want to do this job!’ So, I said yeah, and now I like it!
Maria: Did you ever learn something from this job?
Eliana: Um, now, it sounds weird, but like, I know the alphabet better! Like, I don’t need to sing it in my head anymore (laughs).
Elizabeth: Well, now since I get to go around the library and shelve books, I feel like I know where everything is.
Lucas: I now know how to shelve books and I know what order they go in.

Hello Hoffman Hornets. Today, I have the founders of the Animation Club with me to discuss what it is, and how we can learn more about it. Please welcome Luke and Jackson.
Siya: What inspired you to start this club?
Luke: Well, YouTube definitely had a big effect on me because there are a lot of animators on YouTube. And, since I like drawing, I thought it would be cool if I could be an animator.
Siya: Awesome! So why did you decide to do a club on animation over something else?
Luke: Well, currently animation is the biggest thing I'm into. It's something I'm really interested in and want to learn more about.
Siya: What apps do you guys use during animation club?
Luke: That's a hard one because, as Ms. Kemper [who leads the club] showed us, there are 5 different types of animation. So, for example, stop motion, which is what we're using currently, makes animation by taking a bunch a pictures and stringing them together. It makes an object look like it's moving.
Siya: Cool! So what type of of things do you guys animate?
Jackson: So far we all we've done is stop motion. We've made a little clay circle, and then we had this little sheet and we would move it across that. We've done a lot a lot of animation on paper.
Siya: Cool. So the next question is how long does it take you to animate one thing?
Jackson: Well, it depends on how patient you are. It could take you thirty seconds or less, but if you want to make a long one that is high quality, that will take you a long time.
Luke: Can I add something?
Siya: Sure.
Luke: It also depends on how long you want it to be. For example, if you want one for 13 minutes compared to three, the 13 minute one would obviously take much longer. In fact, it would probably take three or four times longer because of the amount of work involved.
I hope you enjoyed my interview with Luke and Jackson. If you want to know more about Animation Club, please reach out to them or Ms. Kemper.

Hello Hoffman Hornets. We are here to talk about New Year's.
New Year is a time to celebrate beginnings. Many people like to watch football or have a big celebration. In downtown Chicago, there is a bright star all lit up and raised just as it is officially the New Year. Of course, one of the largest celebrations is in New York City.
Thinking of something to do on New Year's? Why not get together with family? Or go shopping? Families can play board games or go visit relatives. You could also do nothing: there is more than one way to enjoy something.
The New Year is a time where family and friends can come together and wish each other happiness, and get a chance to catch up.
Happy New Year to everyone here at Hoffman. See you next year!
Which pet did you prefer: dogs or cats? It's a tough one, with some people having very strong opinions.
Please check out our Google Form to vote: Dogs or Cats.
We'll have the results in the next issue of the Hoffman News!

Caution: This may be disgusting...or dangerous!
Would you rather...
...Eat a hot dog left on the street or eat mac and cheese off a dirty bowl used by your baby sibling?
...Be a genius, but have no friends or have a lot of friends but you don’t meet your academic point for your grade?
...Be allergic to everything but plastic and have everything you ever wanted or not allergic to anything but have no toys?
...Read a book everyday but have no electronics or would you rather have all the electronics possible but don’t know how to read?
This has been Would You Rather!!!

If you know how to speak Spanish, you’ll probably know who he is: "El Mago." The Magician.
Ednel Javier “Javy” Baez was born on December 1, 1992 in Puerto Rico. When he was 13, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida with his two brothers and sister in order to get medicine for his sister who had spina bifida.
Before his dad died, he and his two brothers were introduced to baseball. When he got into high school, his coach saw how talented he was and wanted scouts to recognize him. So, he made Javy work harder than anyone on the team.
Finally, in college, scouts finally started taking notice. In 2011, he graduated and tried out for the MLB. He was successful and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs. He was in the minor leagues for three years before he finally made it to the majors in 2014.
Javy had been an incredible defender, but just an average offensive second baseman, until his breakout year in 2018. When he hit his first homer of the year in April, he just wouldn’t stop hitting them.
He hit so many homers (34), it won him the Silver Slugger Award and a chance to be the MVP! (Which he sadly didn’t win.) But, he did make it to the National league All Star team, and appeared in the Home Run Derby!
This goes to show that even when you come from a rough start, you can still get all the way to the top.
