Henking and Hoffman Schools have once again participated in a special program called Candy for Veterans. Each year, students from these schools donate leftover Halloween candy to bring a smile to soldiers stationed overseas.
Logan sat down with the person responsible for organizing this great program, his mother.
Logan: How did you come up with the idea for Candy For Soldiers?
Mom: I heard an advertisement on the radio for Operation Gratitude, an organization in California that includes leftover Halloween candy in care packages sent to soldiers stationed overseas.
Logan: How many people do it with you?
Mom: We’ve been collecting at Henking and Hoffman schools for quite a few years. Over the years, many people have helped with the service projects. This year, the Lindsay family is helping by collecting and sorting the candy that is donated at Henking, while we are collecting and sorting the candy that is donated at Hoffman.
Logan: Where do you ship all the candy?
Mom: The first year we organized the collection, we shipped all of the candy to Operation Gratitude in California. However, the shipping costs were expensive. We had no idea how much candy would be donated that first year and were overwhelmed with the positive response from the families at Henking and Hoffman. The cost for shipping the candy was $500. Fortunately, different organizations in the Glenview community donated money that covered the shipping costs.
Since then, we found a local organization that accepts the candy donations and distributes the candy to soldiers who are currently serving our country over sea and veterans who previously served our country.
Logan: Finally, why Is this important to you?
Mom: [Logan’s] dad is a veteran and served in the military for years. He was also stationed overseas for a while. I’m very proud of his service and I am very grateful to all of the men and women who serve our country.
I also understand how difficult it is to be separated from your family. I think we should all do our part to support those soldiers. If getting some candy in a care package helps to keep soldiers’ spirits up, then I’m all for it. It’s the least we can do.
I also like this service project because it directly involves the kids at Henking at Hoffman. It makes me very proud to know that you and your classmates actually give up some of your Halloween candy for soldiers and veterans.

As many of you know, the Stanley Cup made a visit to Henking School earlier this year.
Anthony sat down with PE teacher Mr. Norberg to talk about this exciting day, as well as his life in hockey.
Anthony: How did you get permission to get the Stanley Cup for a day?
Mr. Norberg: A friend of mine, Steve Richmond, who works for the player development of the Washington Capitals, it was his day with the cup, and he offered to bring it to Henking.
Anthony: Are you still involved in hockey today?
Mr. Norberg: Yes, I still am involved in hockey, and I see you sometimes at the ice rink! I coach goalies, and I am a skills coach all the way up to high school kids. I also coach high school girls.
Anthony: How did you and [Mr. Richmond] meet?
Mr. Norberg: My friend and I go way back, a long time ago, from when I was a kid. Him and I played together for a few years. Then, after high school, we played together in Canada. We actually lived together, and played together on the same line!
Anthony: When did you start playing hockey?
Mr. Norberg: When I was 12 years old. I started late. I used to get in lots of trouble though, and that’s why I started playing hockey.
Anthony: What position did you play?
Mr. Norberg: I played defense and wing. Steve was more physical than I; he used to protect me out there. He used to fix the people that weren’t nice to me, how does that sound? (laughs) He went on to playing college hockey, and he played professional. I played college, but then went on with my life to become a teacher.

Lucy: Hi, I’m Lucy and we’re showing the movie of the week. Sydney? What is the movie?
Sydney: The movie of the week is "Wonder." Lucy, do you like the movie "Wonder?"
Lucy: Yes I do because it's sad, but it's also a very nice, creative, and funny movie. I hope all of you have read the book and watched the movie!
Sydney: Can you give us a short summary of the movie?
Lucy: Yes, I can. "Wonder" is about a boy named Auggie, who has a facial deformity and is going to middle school. It tells about adventures that he has, both good and bad, and what his siblings and friends think of his face, also.
Sydney: The actors in "Wonder" are Auggie, played by Jacob Tremblay; Nate, who is Owen Wilson; Isabel, played by Julia Roberts; and Via, who is Izabela Vidovic.
Lucy: I hope all of you read the book "Wonder". It's in the Hoffman Library!
