Background

Ms. Johnson is an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher working with a diverse group of elementary school students. Her class consists of 25 students, aged 8 to 10, from various cultural backgrounds. Ms. Johnson is dedicated to helping these students improve their English language skills and fostering a supportive learning environment. However, recently she has been facing significant management challenges in her classroom.

Issue

The primary issue in Ms. Johnson's ESL class is the lack of respect and inclusivity among the students. Many students do not raise their hands when they want to speak, leading to interruptions and chaos during lessons. Also, many students have trouble working in teams. Finally, some students mock their peers when they speak with an accent different from the standard Canadian accent.

Key Events

During a lesson on vocabulary for a new learning and evaluation situation, Ms. Johnson notices that when she elicits ideas, several students, including Carlos and Maria, eagerly shout out answers without waiting to be called on. This disrupts the flow of the lesson and makes it challenging for other students to participate. Furthermore, both students have difficulty working harmoniously a team of four students. 

Later, when Maria is interacting with her teammates, she speaks with a noticeable accent. A few students, including Jason and Emily, start snickering and whispering to each other. Maria's confidence visibly wanes as she notices their reactions, and she hesitates to continue reading.
