Red Square

The Red Square at Georgetown University in Washinghton D.C.

What is the Red Square?

The Red Square is a point of pride at our Washington D.C. campus. As a dedicated free speech zone, it safeguards Georgetown students' right to convene and express their opinions freely, even if there is a conflict with the university's official views.

In the words of 'The Hoya'- main campus's main student newspaper- "it acts as both a symbol and reminder of the right to free expression that belongs to Georgetown students."

The Red Square acts as a community space by the students to advertise events, causes and organizations.

Red Square in GU-Q

The Red Square in Georgetown's campus in Qatar was opened on January 15th, 2019 under the Presidency of Malak Elmoh.

Fatima Farooqui (SFS-Q'21) wrote in 'The Hoya', the oldest and largest newspaper in Georgetown University in Washington D.C.

“The Red Square at the Qatar campus is a combined effort by the administration and the SGA here to encourage people to talk more freely about things that they feel like they cannot talk about. It is a great step towards progress. So far, it has been pretty successful.”

How do we plan an event at Red Square?

If you wish to book the Red Square for a paricular event, please get in touch with the SGA via the email. You will receieve confirmation regarding your request!

Can we put up posters on the Red Square walls?

The students of GU-Q are free to hang up their posters on the Red Square wall. But no posters must be placed on the glass doors facing the atrium and on the wooden paneling. Special walls have been installed in the Red Square so that students can put up the posters.

Please note that all the posters will be taken down on the 15th and 30th of every month.
