Step 1: Log in to obeyyourquizmaster.com and click on Substitutes in the black menu bar at the top, then click "I Need A Sub" to put your quiz night up for grabs.
Step 2: Fill out all of the required fields in the Substitution Request form.
a. Fill out the Venue field
Please make sure you check the three-letter brand at the end of the venue's name to make sure you're requesting the correct kind of coverage.
bng=Boombox Bingo
jbl=Jeopardy Bar League
gwd=Geeks Who Drink
sbt=Small Batch Trivia
dnb=Dave and Buster's
One bar may run two or three different brands on different nights. Please slow down and pay attention for the correct brand.
b. Fill out the Event Date field.
Please doublecheck your date to ensure it's correct.
c. Distance from venue lets you choose how far away you want to contact hosts (5, 10 or 25 miles from the venue). When in doubt, go with 25. If you're in a large metroplex like Manhattan or inner loop Chicago, you may want to lower that radius.
d. If you selected the brand correctly, Job Type should be pretty easy. Bingo Host will be the only option for bng venues. JBL Host for jbl venues. Quizmaster for sbt and gwd and dnb venues.
Step 3: When you've completed the fields, the amount of hosts receiving the request will be shown below. Click Confirm Request, and your sub request will be sent out.
You can check the status of all your open sub requests on the My Requests section of the Substitution Dashboard.
PLEASE NOTE: If you request a sub through the sub portal, you are responsible for sending your Sub Guide to whoever picks up that request. The Sub Guide WILL NOT automatically be attached to the confirmation.
If you already have a sub lined up for your night off, simply submit a manual substitution form. Bookmark this!
Attach your Sub Guide to the request so that whoever is picking up the quiz has all the important information they'll need to host for you.
Please do not email qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com with your sub information. We will redirect you, politely, to the manual sub form.
If you haven't bookmarked that link yet, no worries - it's on the Home page of ObeyYourQuizmaster!
You want to sub? Awesome! We want you to work. First, go to Substitutions on obeyyourquizmaster.com. Then, go to the My Requests tab. You'll see any open requests under "Who Needs a Sub?" If there aren't any requests, just wait and check your email. When one pops up, you can click on it and accept the assignment.
Not seeing sub requests in your area but want to work?
If you're new or new to the area, check the Contact List and start introducing yourself. If you're in an area with a QM/BC Social media group, make sure you're in it. In some areas, hosts use these to source subs instead of/in addition to the Sub Portal.
If you're brand new, ask your in-venue trainers to reach out to you if they need a sub, or to introduce you to other QMs and BCs who do. They can also add you to any social media groups in the area. In short, make connections! Everyone loves the person who covers their shift when they're out.
Still having trouble? Email qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com and the QM Support team can at least link you up with nearby QMs via email so that you can get to know each other. It may take a couple of days if we're slammed, but we will do it. After all, if you can sub and cover shifts, it makes our jobs much easier!
To access the Contact List, log onto obeyyourquizmaster.com, select Substitutions, then select Contact List. Put in the name of your venue, and it will automatically list all QMs/BCs available on that venue's weekly quiz night. You'll see their phone numbers, their sistance from the venue, and more GWD info. To get email address, right-click on the QM's name and select "Copy email address."
PLEASE NOTE: The contact list is STRICTLY for finding sub coverage for your quizzes. It's not for personal use or finding coverage for other types of hosting gigs.
A good sub guide should make the gig as easy as possible for your sub. Always write sub guides as if you were communicating the instructions to a BRAND NEW QM/BC. Many QMs/BCs come in not knowing the names for XLR or RCA cables. Many QMs/BCs who have been around for years also don't know the difference, so even better than listing "red and white pointy cable" and "three prong thingy" would be pictures!
Some things to include in your sub guide:
Brand of quiz - GWD or SBT?
Wi-fi password
MOD/lead bartender point of contact during quiz night
Where the equipment is stored
Where to set up
What the prizes are
Still feel like you're not sure how to make a sub guide? Don't worry, we've made you a template! Just fill in the information and fire it off to your sub. Also, send a copy to qmsupport@geekswhodrink.com so we have it on file.
If you really really really don't want to use a template, here are some examples of great sub guides.
