Vertebrates have backbones.
There are 5 types: mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians
Some animals are suitable pets but others are not.
Some animals give birth to live young; others lay eggs.
Animals need food, water, sleep and air to survive
Animals have life cycles that vary from birth to death
Carnivores eat meat, herbivores eat plants. Omnivores eat both.
The digestive system is a group of organs which break down food and absorb essential nutrients before excreting the waste.
Where food is chewed by teeth.
Rolls food into a ball to be swallowed.
Food is swallowed down here and passes to the stomach.
Food continues to be digested here and absorbed into the bloodstream.
Food continues to be digested here and absorbed into the bloodstream.
Nutrients from the small intestine are processed in the liver.
Where water moves back into the blood and faeces form.
When faeces enter the rectum, a signal is sent to the brain to tell you it is time to defecate (poo).
Your teeth help you to break up your food. This is part of the physical part of digestion (the chemical part happens on your tongue and in your stomach). We have different types of teeth which all perform different jobs.
Fun fact: Different animals have different teeth. They can be different if the animals are herbivores or carnivores. Google animals' teeth to check out how their teeth compare to ours.
Incisors - These help us to cut and tear food into small chewable pieces
Canines cut and shred tougher food, such as meat.
They are named after the Latin name for dogs and wolves - because they look like dogs' teeth!
These crush and grind your food.
These are the real tough teeth . They crush and grind up all the really tough food - just like Wreck-It Ralph!
Food webs show us how plants and animals rely on each other to survive. Animals eat plants (if they are herbivores), animals (if they are carnivores) or both (if they are omnivores, like us) to survive. Therefore, lots of animals in the ecosystem rely on each other to survive.
Here are some examples of food webs:
There are 3 main elements that make up a food web. They are:
The Sun - This is the source of all energy for plants.
Producers - These are organisms that produce their own food (like plants)
Consumers - Organisms that cannot produce their own food so they have to eat other plants or animals to get their energy.
